My school is participating on a recycling campaign in which there is a contest.

The school with the biggest quantity of electronics (by weight) will win prizes.

The thing is that there's a pile of computers on the entrance and I can't resist looking there and maybe I'll bring something heavier to the pile.

So, I'm going there when I have the time and I was thinking of asking you if there's anything valuable there.

Is that ok?

And also have you noticed how agressive the campaigns are these days?

Let them all know how valuable the real old computers are. For some reason some people feel recycling is more important. Save the old ones.

Yeah, emphasis should be put on the fact that re-use is far superior to recycling, even recycling causes the ever so evil carbon emissions as well as whatever else gets released into the environment throughout the recycling process.

I hope you have some luck anyways if there is anything interesting in there.

I agree reuse is better for machines only a few years old with no real issues (other then needing a reformat), but the older stuff should be recycled (after collectors get their pick). Mining copper is much more destructive to the environment then recycleing old motherboards to reclaim metals.

It would be nice if laptops were all made from high strength aluminum that can be 100% recycled instead of plastic (which comes from oil) and have limited reuse other then filler.
