if there isn't one yet, i'd like to request some general guidelines for reviving old hardware. some tips for things that are easy to miss would be helpful.

i'll be reviving two pentium II's soon. it was working fine before i disassembled it and put on storage five years ago. some parts i used on newer hardware but i have replacements. when should i take it to professionals in case some electronics were busted? is that even advisable? when should i quit?

Considered by most here, I guess that is not old, just maybe a bit outdated :)

Economically, I think taking those machines to a professional or spending any money on it at all for repair makes no sense.
But if you are attached to them, you might try yourself.
Making a sticky for this might be too much, as there are so many variations with this machine class that it is never going to be specific enough.

Maybe its best to just post specific problems in the off-topic non vintage machine thread- you'll get help, I'm sure.

I'm working on something similar over on the wiki (in the hardware section to be specific). Right now I'm not much further than describing the basic concepts and techniques, stuff like what integrated circuits are and what piggybacking entails. The intention is to refer back to these general articles in more specific troubleshooting/repair guides, along the lines of what you can do/check if you have problem X.
