Hi All,
It's been some time, but now there are some good news.
There were many problems to solve in the BeMicro-CV FPGA Development Kit.
The main problem with a specific series of Cyclone-V cips was solved by
a Cyclone-V FPLL Patch from ALtera. Many other problems I could solve, like EPCS reset
and PLL Reset Qsys. My 2 projects now are running based on a prototyp environment.
The BeMicro CV has 128MB memory and a micro-SD already onboard. I still use the
SD-Card running in the slow SPI mode. However, I am in the implementation phase to
immplement WLAN( based on ESP8266) instead SD-Card and serial I/O. My goal is to
get a connection from the simulator to a smart phone or PC and to be able to upload
and download the data. My projects:
RL01/RL02 simulator: Enclosed find a picture from the prototyp with installed ESP8266
WLAN interface. The simlator will support up to 4 RL-units simultaneously(DL0: to DL3:).
The prototyp board is running now with level converter 74LVC245 instead of resistor-network.
The write timing problem which occurred when using converter chips is also fixed and I also
will try to use other chips, like 74LVC8T245 . Another problem is still open: Replacing the
old RL-Bus chips 75107 and 75113 with new technology. It is also planned to develop a PCB
board. You will find more news soon on my hompage and please give me a call, if you are
interested on a PCB board.
MFM disk simulator: This project is being developed partly in cooperation with the
Computer-Museum-München and is still in the protype phase. A new feature of this project
is the clone mode. It is now possible to copy a disk to the SD-Card for later use running
in simulator mode. It also takes into account the issue little/big endian architecture to
run it not only in a DEC-environment. However, there are already competitors products like
the Beaglebone Black Board implementation from http://www.pdp8online.com/mfm/ . Good job
and very well done. There are advantages and disadvantages using a FPGA or a micro-board.
Also, there are also still many issues to resolve, like the different CRC algorithmics and
the different ID-AM and Data-AM implementierung in the track format. Each manufacturer has
implemented it differently. For this project It is also planned to develop a PCB board.
For more information, plaese call me. Please find enclosed the pictures of the prototyp,
also with WLAN interface. Every comment is welcome.

I think this is a cable and mechanical issue. There is no plan to get the emulator direcly plugged on the RQDX, sorry

Reinhard,

I was recently in Munich and saw your 11/23 SE at what I assume is the site of the Computer-Museum-München. I'm sorry I hadn't remembered that you lived in the area but look forward to meeting you on a future visit.

I would be very interested in purchasing printed circuit boards for your RL emulator. Maybe I'm too conservative, but I prefer the SD card solution to the WLAN approach. I like the idea of being able to change SD cards as if they were cartridges and not be dependent on having a smart phone or PC nearby to load new data. With WLAN, would you still use the SD card for retaining the working image(s)?

Thanks for your work on this project!

Jack

Jack,

that's a nice surprise and please log in on time if you're back in Munich.
The RL02 emulator is not quite finished. The problem with the old 75107/75113 chips has been solved
already and will be replaced by other chips using only one voltage source. The WLAN will be optional
and the primary storage option will be the SD-Card. We also want to test the new BEMICRO CV A9
board. I hope it is full pin compatible because it has an Ethernet port and a smarter layout.
The RL02 emulator PCB board is already in the design phase.

Reinhard
