RSX-11M+ sysgen question

Don't make me read the RSX sysgen manual - it's 274 pages!

Ok, if you've subscribed to my adventures, you know I struggled to get RSX-11 on to my Seagate SCSI disk until I broke down and finally bought a SCSI2SD adapter (if you didn't subscribe, and are configuring MicroPDPs, just get one!). Now that this is complete, it's time for RSX-11 sysgen.

My machine has my SCSI controller at 17760334 and the RQDX3 at 17762150. To boot from dialog mode, I issue the command BOOT DU4 to hit the Seagate SCSI disk (it's scsi id 0). But, after the RSX boots, it thinks it's on DU0. This is confusing to me, since I see that as the hard disk on my RQDX3.

When I start sysgen from my Seagate disk, it asks "Enter the name of the disk drive containing your target system disk [ddnn:] [S R:2-5]:"

So, can I sysgen the device I booted from (the Seagate disk)? If I can, what exactly is it? DU0 or DU4?

If I can't sysgen my boot disk, I'll snap in the SCSI2SD device (it's a SCSI id 1), boot from that (which then is DU5) and then indicate the Seagate disk as my target. I suppose I would still have the same question as to what it's reference is (DU?).

Since I can't be bothered to read the 274 page RSX SYSGEN manual either (!) can I present an alternative solution?

You can remap the the boot devices within the PDP-11 CPU firmware if you like to match what you have in the SYSGEN... The manual for the boot firmware has fewer pages to read (if I remember correctly)!

I would, however, recommend using a separate disk to 'play on' to start with. When I started I had a bootable RSX RL02 that worked - and then I built my test systems on a separate disk device. The first few attempts will either not be right - or will require 'tweaking' anyhow. So I would suggest being able to recover from a disaster to start with.

That's my 10 cents at least.

Dave

...I can always go back to my SD card with the distribution media?

Here's what RSX thinks is in the system:

Hunta, I'm not sure I follow what you're showing me in your two configurations.

In Config1 you've got a CMD CQD SCSI controller at 17762150 with two disk drives.
In Config2 you've got a CMD CQD SCSI controller at 17762150 with two disk drives, but you've defined some additional disk drives using different SCSI ids..

In my case, I have my SCSI controller at a secondary MSCP address and the RQDX3 at the primary address. Ideally, I'd like all drives to be visible if I boot from any of my SCSI drives (e.g., DU4, which is my first SCSI disk)

When I boot from DU4, and run this command, here are my results:

>CON DISPL ATTR FOR DUA
DUA
..Csr=160334, Vector=000154, Pri=000005, Urm=000001
>

As far as I can imagine, the ROM, when booted without specifying the controller address, will use the standard address, for the MSCP controllers - 172150. Therefore, booting from DU4 will be booting from the RQDX3 controller. If I remember the documentation correctly, up to 4 disks with numbers from 0 to 3 can be connected to the RQDX3 controller, that is, booting from DU4 will actually boot from DU0, which corresponds to what RSX shows. To boot from the second controller, you need to specify its address, the boot line should look like BOO DU4:/A with correct address on ROM question.

But if you use a distribution system, then you won't be able to use two controllers - the distribution system uses a driver that supports one controller, but you need a driver that will support two controllers. So you must do system generation. You can specify DU0 as the target device at the sysgen stage, and after the end of the system generation, download the generated RSX and transfer it to the second controller's disk

what you're showing me in your two configurations.
I have tried to show how the RSX assigns device numbers for disks, connected to the MSCP controller. It doesn't matter what ID the first disk described in the controller has - for RSX it will have number 0. Only if 5 disks are described in the controller, the disk actually connected with ID 4 will be shown in the system as DU4:, if it described as last disk.

Interesting. The ROM seems a little smarter - I'm able to boot from 160334 as DU4 without specifying the address. I did set the starting LUN as 4 in the SCSI controller firmware.

From your reply, it seems that I should boot from the distribution system on SCSI2SD (ROM's DU5), sysgen to "DU0",, which is the ROM's DU4.

Incidentally, here's what I see when I boot from the SCSI2SD:

Yes, and, when I boot the first SCSI disk (the Seagate), RSX considers that DU0:

Code:

I am testing SYSGEN in simh.

I have a couple questions:

1. I chose XX as my crash dump device, so that it calls for a loadable DU. In theory, I would use the RX50, but at 400K, I think that will fail with a 4MB main memory?
2. How do I find the vectors I should use for my two MSCP controllers, RQDX3 and CMD CQD-440 disk controllers? The manuals for those boards don't exactly specify. Am I free to assign them within the range, the lower the number the higher priority?

Incidentally, I also said no to the XDT debugger.... I don't think I would need that for normal use. I won't be writing drivers..

I know that if the CSR address is 172150, then the vector will be 154. But what the vectors for other CSR addresses will be is still a mystery to me.

And the weekend passed under the banner of Falcon and PLM chip programming. So I didn't get to the second MSCP controller.
