Hello: I'm new here, so I hope I've posted to the right area. I am looking for some general help with booting my 128. When I turn it on, the little center icon with the question mark appears, but slowly disappears before I put in a floppy. Does anyone have an idea as to what can be wrong with this computer? It has not been turned on for many many years, however the plus and classic were in the same boat, and they booted and are operating fine.
If this isn't the right area to post this request for some help, will someone please re-direct me? Thanks.

I should also add that when the icon disappears, the screen goes black. I guess it's the screen turning colour that makes the icon disappear.

The Support forum is support for the forum itself but I can see where you were going with that. I moved it to the proper Mac related forum where someone can hopefully help you out.

Welcome aboard!

Do you hear any unusual noises when the screen is powered on?

When it goes black is there power to the rest of the computer (i.e. when you insert a disk is there read activity during the black screen)?

If you see a normal boot screen image and it just fades away, I would guess you are dealing with a bad crt, as opposed to problems on the analog or logic boards.

Any compact Mac can be repaired - it's just a matter of how much effort you want to put into it. There are others with better advice than mine; search here for past Q & A sessions.

Thanks for your response. No unusual noises when I turn it on. Because the screen faded, I didn't try to insert a floppy, but I'll do that next time I get a chance to work with it and report back.

Those old Macs suffer from problems on the analog board.

Check all the caps for splitting or rupturing. They also had problems with cracked solder joints on the flyback transformer, switching transformer, diodes, and width coil that will need to be fixed too.

I think you are running into those kinds of problems.

There used to be places on the web where you could get kits to refurb those boards but I haven't seen one of those kits in YEARS. I used to work for a company that sold those kits back in the mid 90s - Contemporary Concepts out of Paris, TX.

Thanks Vlad for moving the thread. And thanks RJ for your comments. I will check out everything and see if I can't get this working. Otherwise I'll have to find someone local to help me out.
