My eldest brother has recently taken to sneaking on my computer while I'm at school to download music and mess with his iPod and myspace. He's been banned off doing that on the family computer after it became rife with Viruses (virii?) after he just ran around the internet downloading music and God knows what else. It annoys me, because I payed for my computer with my own money, I look after it, its the most exspensive thing I own with a lot of important and private data. I know asking or telling him wont make any difference, so I'm looking in general for some detterent or some form of protection. I protect my computer with a windows password, but I dont use it after a screensaver, and it isnt asked for after I hibernate (which I do a lot). Any good brother scaring utilities out there?
 
Why not just have it ask for a password after hibernating? Surely it can do that.
 
Maybe you can convert a high voltage, low ampere source (phaser?) into a seat, so he'll get the shock of his life when he sits down? :twisted: :eek:nfire:
 
Do what I do, have the os ask for a password ever time a site is visited. They can be all sites or you can develop a list. Say myspace. Whenever myspace is visited, you can either provide a password automatically or have the os ask you for the password ever time the site is visited. It's under internet options, so it only affects IE, not firefox or other browsers. There are lot of other settings you can affect on your machine, just gotta learn about them. Do a google search for 'local security settings' and you should get a bunch of tutorials sites.

I have a 14-yr old, gotta keep him from the bad places online. And be sure to stay on top of the security settings, if he has access to change them, then it's useless. I would also have a logon specifically to you, and any guest has limited access. Your logon would have unlimited access, though. It's a lot of steps but it's workable.

Tried it with IE, and it looks like the sort of thing I'm after, unfortunately I use firefox. Could you please help me out a bit more with the Local Security Settings thing? sounds like i'm on the right path.

A phaser eh? sounds like a plan! Will my local Dixons stock them?
 
Look. This thread is rediculous. Any OS that you might be using has the ability to ask for a password after hibernation. Just find it and turn it on?!?
 
Easy, just shut it down. Hibernation is useless really, just either shutdown or seriously harden security. Its not that hard to do.....

Do you have a firewall? You can lock the connections totally down until you open them back up with a password. I know I've seen this option with both ZoneAlarm and somewhere in the Win settings. Not the windows firewall, but in the security setitngs. About the MS tools, just go through them all and turn on some features to see what they do. When you find a good way, let that be it. And tweak up your firewall settings, too. If you don't want him using different programs or going to certain websites turn em off. Password everything.
 
Right, finally found the option for a password for hibernation. However, he still uses it to charge his iPod, cos he doesn't need to log on to do that. it's no big deal though, just a slight annoyance but at least he cant delete/move/nosey at anything. My PC wont boot with the iPod plugged in anyway, but I won't tell him that!
