I remember talk of this years ago and remember it required a fast CPU but looking closer I wonder if a similar technique could be used to make Tandy sound emulate Adlib or Soundblaster

Given my first real Pc was a 1000rlx things like pinball dreams playing full digitized sound on a Tandy system interest me but no idea how it was done

Ah well

Because this kind of emulation requires a fast 386, and all 386 Tandys already have a DAC, and all 386 Tandys can accept a sound card, there is essentially no use case for what you're proposing, which is why nobody has written it.

This guy has the same system as I do but I could never get the sound to work.
In that example, the PSSJ DAC is leveraged in direct-write mode, where an LPTx address has been redirected to that of the DAC. This effectively makes the PSSJ DAC behave as an "internal" Covox Speech Thing or generic LPT DAC.

I'm not sure about Pinball Dreams, but as demonstrated with Pinball Fantasies:

  • Download Jeffrey Hayes' Tandy DAC Sound Package.
  • From the TSPAK package, run "SETDAC /P2" to appropriately configure the PSSJ DAC and LPT2 address.
  • Run Pinball Fantasies' SETSOUND.EXE routine, selecting either the "Speech Thing" or "DA converter" options (they're exactly the same), LPT2 as the output port, and an appropriate "sound quality" option (MEDIUM, or HIGH).
  • Go to town.
