Switched on my dtk xt clone and the magic blue smoke came out..

Do you know where the smoke came from? If it is the RIFA, that is part easy to replace. If it was the floppy controller, in particular an elco, cut it off, replace it and restart the computer: it most likely should work. Then replace the elco.

Just in case: with "elco", he means electrolytic capacitor (I guess it might not be clear to native speakers of English - we use "Elko" in German as well).

If there was smoke, it was either a RIFA cap or a tantalum cap. Well, if it was a cap at all. Look for burn marks.

Sergey's XT floppy with Serial port has a blown chip. The square socketed one. Burnt my thumb taking it out. Very sore. Is the RIFA the big one on the Tandon. Where is the elco on the floppy controller.

The half length Floppy Controller and Tandon work. Leads me to believe Sergey's card was the problem and the source of the smoke.

If Sergey's XT floppy with Serial port wasn't seated properly would that have blown the chip?
I just tried it but if you stick an ISA card in a slot, it aligns itself. I can imagine that if the plastic at on e of the ends is missing, things can go wrong. But with an exception, in the 38 years I'm working with ISA slots I never run into trouble due to misalignment. And the exception was caused by damaged pins that were bent sideways.

It can also be the case that you ran into a bad IC.

For Timo: I really thought that elco was an international abbreviation. So you learn every day.

Im back in action with one problem even tho the xt fdc is set for 1.44 mb fdd, it wont boot from the a drive. a 720 kb works.

If you boot from the 720K, can you then read a 1.44m diskette put into the same drive?
If yes, I wonder if the problem described at [here] also applies to some motherboard BIOS' other than the discussed IBM ones.

And RIFA is a company name.
Really? Funny. We Dutch have the tendency to name products after the first well known brand. So a lot of people call their navigator TomTom, even if they have one of another brand. In Poland the official word for bicycle is "rover" because that is the brand they imported far before WW2.
