I've had this Tandy 2810HD since the early 90s. The only 286 I've owned. Last year I pulled it out knowing the primary battery would need to be replaced and hoping the CMOS battery had kept its seal. The primary battery was in worse shape than I expected so I put it away until this weekend.
So this weekend I tried to boot the thing using the external supply without success. Pressing power button produced a single beep, the hard disk would spin up and sometimes the back light would come on but after a few seconds it seemed to reboot without the initial power on beep.
In all the futzing around I noticed something was rattling around inside the case. Long story short, while I was opening the case a surface mount electrolytic cap fell out. C1 in the lower left corner.
Upon further examination almost all the SMD electrolytic caps have leaked and corroded nearby components.
The CMOS battery has kept its seal so that's something, not.
The case, display and keyboard appear to be undamaged, although I should probably disassemble the display to check for SMD electrolytics,
It was cathartic to write this down. Maybe one day I'll make into a terminal of some sort.
