Just curious - is there a ROM dump of the microcontroller code around?
Looks like it was a mask-programmed chip - so possibly it would be from a de-cap of one if there isn't a "Test" mode that could read the code.
Such cool little plotters. I can't imagine they were reliable, looking at the mechanism.
