TCP/IP printing in WFW3.11

Is there a way to print to an HP LaserJet that has an internal Jetdirect print server by using TCP/IP in Windows for Workgroups 3.11?

The Jetdirect server will recognize TCP/IP, IPX, Ethertalk or DLC. I have a copy of the old Win 3.1 version of HP Jetadmin but it seems to only work with Netware and not TCP/IP.

I've Googled this for a couple of days and still don't see a way to do it.

Any ideas?

The only way I know of doing this, is to use an intermediary OS, that is server oriented, such as Windows NT 3.5.x or 4.x (and of course 2000, XP and so on)

Once the NT box has a printer defined for TCP/IP printing, this can then be shared out to the Windows 3.11 machine, like any other printer.

It will still be all TCP/IP, so the machine don't have to be near each other.

Look for an old ISP's dial-up disk/kit for 16-bit systems. They would have packed the files you'll need for Win 3.11 systems. Some people archive old Earthlink or local ISP "getting started" kits hopefully.

I get "DOS Error 31" when trying to connect to a printer shared by my XP box.

Hmm, either with Win2K or XP, they went with encrypted passwords! Older Windows/DOS stuff just isn't going to get along with those newer shares!

Took me years to figure that one out. I keep forgetting it too. Every once in awhile I'll try to get my Win98 to open an XP shared folder. Nope, no way.

Yep. The XP box and the WFW3.11 box can see and ping each other just fine. The XP box has no problem accessing any drive or device on the WFW3.11 box. Although the WFW3.11 box can see the XP box it cannot access anything on it.

That's why I wanted to figure out a way for the WFW3.11 box to access the HP LaserJet/JetDirect directly.

Solved!

Solved!

I figured out how to print from WFW3.11 directly to an HP LaserJet using the JetDirect print server.

There's a free shareware program called "WLPRSPL ver4.2a" which stands for Windows LPR Spooler. It runs great on WFW3.11 and has a DLL built in to communicate directly with HP JetDirect print spoolers.

It's available at SourceForge...
