Teledisk Image of Kaypro 2.2u1 Boot Disk

There were some requests in the Vintage Software board for a Kaypro 2.2u1 CP/M bootdisk; I thought this information might be more visible here. I made a Teledisk image of my Kaypro 2x boot disk (version 2.2u1), which can be found at the link below. I used Teledisk version 2.12.

I didn't test the image so let me know if there are problems. I hope this helps!

For those who do not know - thanks for photo of Arthur C. Clarke the famous sci - fi author who died 2 years ago about this time - at his Kaypro II computer !

On the DVD for Space Odessey 2010 in the extra section he has a Kaypro IV and an Okidata printer pounding away.

Word spread around the world in seconds by internet satellite communication.

He predicted such communication back in 1940's and was criticized.

Any info want to share as to why you use this picture ?

Thanks for noticing. I can't recall where I found the picture on the Internet, but I am a Kaypro collector (for about 21 years) and I have read most of Arthur C. Clarke's works--he was certainly a visionary! This is an excellent account of his use of a Kaypro and telecommunication equipment while writing the script for 2010: http://www.davidrothman.com/jungle.html He used a 300 baud modem and the program MITE to send his script to MGM/UA from Sri Lanka.

Yes, Rothman's info and his paperback book are great at letting others know what it was like back in those early days.

Where are you and what is in your collection?

Years ago Don Maislin sent me a disk image for one of my Kaypros and some manuals I bought. Unfortunately I can't recall using it nor which Kaypro it was destined for. I believe it was for my Kaypro II . He was very specific about identifying the CPU on the board and asked me to read it's label. He said that it wouldn't work on other Kaypro CPUs.

I haven't run across other references to this potential problem in the many references to Kaypros. Could you perhaps elucidate what he was talking about so these OS sources have meaning. I also have a Kaypro 2x.

Go to "bitsavers" and download the free tech manuals for Kaypros. It lists the CP/M versions and the chips on t e mainboard to decide what "specific" Kaypro you have and what CP/M version you need - Kaypro alone had about six [6] different CP/M versions that they used.

With all the confusion at Kaypro, as they struggled to try to survive, a lot slipped thru the cracks. Also, you do not know if any previous owners of a particular Kaypro modified them by many different methods.

The chips are the key. Check many other posts on this web site, including mine, for a lot of specific details.

Ah, the "fun" of vintage computing ! At least this site is preserviing a lot of all this "tech knowledge" before it gets lost as people die off like Maislin.

A friend of mine just got himsel fa Kaypro with no boot disks, and I knew I remembered this thread but from where? Found it, and that link to your page was a life saver, vanderk! This makes me want to own a Kaypro.
 
I am glad it worked! Kaypros can get addicting. I have been collecting them for almost twenty years. My parents used to rent/lease telecommunication and computer equipment back in the late 70s and early 90s. In 1990, they were tossing out tons of obsolete modems (e.g., acoustic couplers and Hayes 1200 and 2400 ) and old computers, which included Kaypros. I managed to secure several and use them for word processing until my undergrad years at college. My collection has since expanded and I still use my Kaypros to occasionally dial-in to a Unix shell account to Telnet and browse the net via Lynx.

I just get my Kaypro 2x working, my 2x has a build in Modem wth a connector in the back. Can you tell me how to do the dial-in to a Unix shell account to Telnet and browse the net via Lynx. Is there any BBS around? Who are they? How to connect to BBS?

Hi, Doug.

I have a membership and dial-up account with the SDF Public Access UNIX System. They have many dial-up numbers across the US that support direct UNIX login access. I use the communication software package MITE, and it came with my Kaypro IIX MTC. Although MITE will allow you to enable the internal modem, I use an external Hayes 9600 set for 2400 baud (characters seem to drop above 2400). The internal modem is only 300 baud and the dial-up service via SDF does not support below 1200 baud. After logging into my UNIX account, I can send e-mail via PINE and browse the net with Lynx (text mode browser). I am also able to use Telnet and Gopher. It is fun going retro with the old Kaypros!

You can also try the few dial-up BBS systems still around. Simply go to http://www.telnetbbsguide.com/dialbbs/dialbbs.htm for a current listing of active dial-up numbers. The Seattle Community Net uses UNIX and may be an option for you. I am sure a few of these BBS systems will permit connections at 300 baud.
