Toshiba Satellite 230CX

Hey all. I found a Toshiba laptop at a car boot sale and after asking the guy afew questions about it I went ahead and bought it. It had Windows 95 preloaded on it with a 1.4GB harddisk and an internal floppy drive. It's nice to use, but 95 was never my favorite OS and I want to upgrade it to Windows 98. So I also bought a USB DVD-Drive but the problem is the USB port on it isn't installed in Windows 95 and whilst I have everything else ready to enable it (the Windows is the B version), I cannot find the USB driver pretty much anywhere on google. Im wondering if anyone else knows where to find one?

Also, since the USB isn't working, I wanted to find a SelectBay CD drive for the laptop. I searched for ages to find compatible items but I have only found one and I'm not certain it'll work. If anyone knows where to get a cheap one or has one to sell, I'm interested.

Finally the fan on the inside isn't spinning at all I don't think. I had the laptop heat up to an extreme degree at one point though now it's fairly warm. The fan itself works but the laptop never seems to use it. The termometer cable for the CPU seems to be intact so I'm confused why it's not being used. I have check the BIOS settings and have enabled it for performance. - Ignore this, the fan kicked in when I left the laptop in DOS on my bed..

Any help with the above would be extremely appreciated.

What kind of ram does it have? I recall back in the day, Windows 98 was a bit more of a hog than Windows 95. Certainly, I loved Windows 98 SE, it was awesome... and I barely considered Windows 2000 an upgrade (even if it was more stable).

What I have done in the past for fan issues like that one is to bypass the mainboard altogether; you can make it always on or put a small switch somewhere on it. Usually that's a killer error, as the sensors and controls on the mainboard can't be replaced so it means a new mainboard.

EDO Style RAM for laptops. It's got 16MB total onboard and somewhere I have more RAM in this style..

You might have better luck finding an inexpensive parallel port or PCMCIA CD drive to use with the Toshiba. Another option is to copy the Win 98 setup files to the Toshiba's hard drive over a network and then run the setup from the hard drive.

I installed it by first backing up the 95 harddrive and then making a custom Windows 98 boot floppy with USB drivers and then booted the install CD off of a USB CD drive. I should sya I formatted the drive since upgrading gave e too many problems. I think I have found an internal CD drive but my priorities are first getting more RAM and then a Network card (WiFi or Ethernet), then CD and maybe a second battery, all of which I have found

Hey again guys. I found a CD drive for the laptop but it's in the states and the seller won't ship to the UK even when I asked. Is there anyone who would be able to buy and ship it to me? Obviously I'll pay all costs...
