Hi my toshiba t3200sx was always a happy computer, i stored it for a couple of months whitout use.
Now when power up will do a single beep and display "cmos shutdown byte error".
removed ram unpluged the cmos batter y but this seems to have no effect same error.
The 'CMOS shutdown byte' is not a byte in your system board's conventional/extended RAM.
The shutdown byte is stored within the RAM component of the CMOS/RTC chip.
The power-on self test of certain computers test that byte. The IBM AT is an example, and at [here], you can see that as "Verify shutdown byte in 146818 RTC chip".
Looking in the T3200SX maintenance manual to see which make-model of CMOS/RTC chip is used, I see:
The memory board is composed of the following components:
• Real time clock (RTC): MC146818A or equivalent
So, an MC146818A or equivalent, residing on the memory board. Perhaps try re-seating the connectors on the memory board.
hi thanks for the info have located the ic is an SMD, and all the components for the RTC/CMOS are inside it all integrated.
Re soldered the pins in the ic just in case, reseated the memory board but no luck the error continue to show up.
I have to source a replacement, theres a seller on ebay that charges 50$ for MC146818A x5 of this ics, expensive but will have to bite the bullet.
Changed the MC146818A from a new one i got in china and this fixed the problem, the computer now works like charm :D.
Took a wile to get the chip but it was a great replacement.
