TRS-80 Model I Level II. Power directly to board?

I will not be buildling or buying a power supply for my TRS-80 (model I, level II), which I've had since my Dad bought it in the 70's when I was in middle school. All I have left is the computer. What I want to know, is: Can I power the board directly with DC power? I understand I need +5, -5, and +12 VDC. I just want to bench test it but don't want to spend any money to make a power supply only to find out the computer is trash. I really only need encouragement (and any hints) but if you know of a reason why I can't poke some power onto the board, and with a handmade video cable find out if the thing has a chance. I did try searching the forum but had no luck.
Thank you for your time.

p.s. In case anyone cares, this is the computer I learned to write Basic an Assembly on, first typing programs from Byte magazine then writing my own assembly. I ended up as a software developer for Xerox for 13 years (Electrical Engineer by education). I spent a lot of time in my teens with this computer. I don't now what happened to the rest of the equipment, tape, power supply, monitor, etc. I found the computer in my parents house when we moved them to a care facility and... well I'd like to see if it still works, because I'm curious.

Hi Daz99,

You certainly can power it without using the stock power supply.

I have a 300W AT power supply I use to power mine.
It has 6 different power leads coming out of it to power a few other old systems (BBC, Apple2c, MicroBee etc.).

Assume you have a USA model 1, not Japanese? (Let me know if you have a Jap Mod1)

Referring to the schematic, desolder R18 (12v line) and R4 (5v line).
You can just desolder one leg and leave them there in place in case you want to return to stock at any time.

Attach voltages from your power supply as shown.

Leave the power switch on the Model 1 in the OFF position, use the power switch on your supply.

Since you don't have the Radio Shack TRS-80 Model 1 Monitor you might want the Composite
Video Information.

The Model 1 video output is a standard composite, but it does have a
DC bias voltage on it. You can make a cable and connect the M1 video
output to any composite video monitor that has a DC blocking capacitor
on the input. I used an old black and white Sony security camera
monitor for many decades, no problem.

Composite cable for TRS-80 Model 1.

Signal - RED - Pin 4 of Din Plug
Shield - wire - Pin 5 of Din Plug

Radio Shack. Catalog number 278-255 Adapter works good.
