I'm planning to start getting my TRS 80 Model 16 up to shape starting in January 2019. My goal is to have it cleaned, maintained and setup with TRS Xenix. I'm looking for some help in answering the following:
1. What sort of Hard Drive options are available for this unit? I've seen the DREM (?) option, but I'm wondering if there are better options. Also, is there any type of enclosure I can put into place for the DREM system board?
2. The system has two 8" floppy drives. Was there ever an MFM Controller and enclosure that could replace one of the drives?
3. I've read that the 16b could be expanded to 768K of RAM. Can this system also be expanded and how is that done?
4. Is there any sort of networking capability? I do have two 25 Pin to Ethernet controllers that will allow basic shell access at speeds up to 57600 baud - but would that be practical?
5. Is there any other sort of enhancements I should be on the lookout for that I haven't covered above?
6. Finally, has anyone seen/heard about either Microsoft or Micro Focus (current owner of Novell) considering open sourcing Xenix? It seems that companies are relaxing their grip on almost 40 year old software these days.
Thanks in advance for everyone's comments!
