I never got into text adventures because mapping was just too tedious and error prone.
If you have to go back, you need to erase your previous move(s), possibly smudging or tearing your map.
If you forget to change your map, your trail is bad.

It seems as though one could use modern software on a laptop, alone side a retro computer
to help create and update a map.

Have any of you done anything like this? What do you use to create your map?

Thanks

There are quite a few specialized tools for this: http://trizbort.genstein.net/ is pretty slick, and a few other utilities are here - http://www.ifarchive.org/indexes/if-archiveXmapping-tools.html (some of these are retro enough themselves!)

My needs are much more modest however, so last time I did any mapping, it was with a text editor (using ASCII 'graphics') on a laptop. If I feel extra fancy, I might break out my Wacom pen-tablet and a graphics editor.
