VCF East October 2023 Swap Meet

I wasnt going to but I thought Id post another. My wife and I had a great time at the swap meet. I got a car load of random things. Too much to list, a commodore 64, at least 3 commodore floppy drives. I bought a 486 Gateway 2000 desktop from Alex, a gameboy advance (just needed batteries), a Tandy 15 meg hard drive, 3 Apple II computers being sold at the very front VCF booth, an apple monitor, floppy disks, I picked up 2 garmin gps units from the free rack and I was able to get one working again in the car. Lots more fun stuff I just cant even remember off the top of my head.

Afterwards we had lunch and then spent the afternoon at the beach. I think we both got a little sun burned. All in all it was a perfect day.

I wish we stayed in New Jersey.

Now yesterday, which was back to a cold, rainy, and miserable day was another story. I was taking my teenage son out for driving lessons and 5 minutes into him driving we were hit by an uninsured, unregistered DRUNK DRIVER. They Tboned my car. Im fine, my son is fine but imagine how rattled you would be if you were involved in an accident while still learning to drive. Not his fault. We were in a roundabout, he was doing everything perfectly as we have been through it a bunch of times before and this guy came flying into it past the yield sign while we are already in the turn. Both thier airbags deployed, mine did not even though they hit me directly on the passenger door( i have side airbags). I got out to see the situation and if anyone was hurt. He had a passenger a woman whose head clearly shattered the windshield. I thought I smelled gasoline and I checked both cars for a leak.. Turned out to be whatever they were drinking. Amazingly my passenger door could open as its well beyond buckled. I can see the unibody is flexed. I am amazed I wasn't injured being the direct point of impact.. Im thankful I wasnt. My son called 911 I told him to ask for an ambulance for the woman. He got the life experience of his first car accident, first 911 call and first time having to give ID and deal with a police officer all in one day... I dont know if that will be good or bad for him. Anyway the people who hit us were acting weird and yelling at me at first. I tried to keep things calm while waiting on the police. Always seems to take forever in those situations. The whole thing took a while and I over heard tidbits.. No insurance, no registration, drinking in the car..... The police officers were great in reassuring my son did absolutely nothing wrong and not to let this discourage him learning.. They told me I could pickup the police report in a week or two. Longer depending on the criminal charges. The woman was taken away by ambulance and the officer asked us to go ahead and head home so they could arrest the driver. Im about to have my second cup of coffee getting the nerve to deal with the stomach ulcer inducing phone call about dealing with my insurance for an uninsured motorist accident. I sold my Acura I have owned for 30 years a couple weeks ago.. So this is/was our only vehicle.

I just want to go back to that perfect day in the sun on the beach in jersey and have a do over..

So to the cynics and druggies bringing thier negative bullshit to this forum and thread. Fuck off. You have no idea what real problems are. Take your negativity elsewhere. This forum, its swapmeets, its vintage computer festivals are something we love and look forward to. Something that is a shining light in the otherwise negative world we live in. If you wanna complain about $5.00 do it somewhere else. Drunk drivers, pot heads, cynics..... There is no place for you in this community.

Sorry for the rant. It needed to be said and I needed to let it out.

Would love to see more pics or hear what else anyone picked up.
Here's my small haul. Everything was really inexpensive.

- stack of IBM PC AT motherboards (Bill Sudbrink)
- tubes of 14-pin IC sockets and 4000-series ICs
- ST-225 hard disk (dunno yet if it works)
- 2 ea. Apple floppy drives (dunno if they work)
- 2 ea. Apple keyboards (claimed working)
- 486 desktop (clean inside and working)

I suppose that I have to jump in here, much as I don't want to.

Folks, please be civil. We can't have discussions keep devolving into name calling.

As far as the cost goes, I certainly understand if you can't afford to pay to attend an event. That is your decision and should certainly align to your means and wants. However, there are significant costs to even doing an open parking lot event, like these swapmeets. Just to list a few, we had to rent a truck to move equipment and supplies around, and we had to pay to get the signs printed.

Please do also remember that we use any funds made over and above our costs (assuming that there are any!) to support the VCF museum and to allow us to put on further events. For instance, there are significant infrastructure repairs and improvements needed on the InfoAge campus that cost a very large amount of money. Imaging that you lived in an 80-year-old temporary US Army building, and you will have an idea of what those might be.

We really appreciate the folks who attended, and miss those who were unable to make it. I really hope that folks had fun!

- Alex

I got this Apple adapter from a free pile at the swap meet.
Dunno what it does. :)

Sorry to hear about the accident. A very scary experience! Being in accidents is no fun. What a crazy story! Glad to hear that you and son are OK. I hope that everything turns out well for you, your family and vehicle. Glad that you enjoyed the swap meet and hope to see you back at the next one!

Hello everyone,
I'm the guy who runs the events at VCF: VCF East, repair workshops, swap meet etc. I was so glad to see all of you there and very happy at the success that it was. So many happy people both the buyers and the sellers. Glad that the swap meet is growing. Glad that I have added things like a second porta potty, food sales, more volunteer help from the Sea Cadets, more organized in general. Thanks so much to all the volunteers who made my job easier! I look forward to planning the next swap meet which will be in June and making it bigger and better for everyone. I hope to fill up that parking lot!
Until the next time.

Take care!

Jeff B.

Thank you @arkaxow and @ajacocks - I appreciate the work you do and happy to contribute with a $5-10 here or there. I wasn’t able to make it out from Philly this time, but hopefully next!
