Wow, 286-based is too veteran for me, but maybe you should ask Louis Ohland, or post on NG comp.sys.ibm.ps2.hardware, as one of us in the U.S. may know of something good.
 
No, the 1MB CL-based adapters are as rare as hen's teeth.

However, although I'm in the U.K. I do have a working Ati 8514 Ultra, which would give you up to 1024x768 @ 256 colours capability. Up to 72Hz non-interlaced monitors supported via INSTALL utility on installation support diskette.

Alternatively I have a couple of IBM SVGA/A adapters (a.k.a. VGA256C). See this post on comp.sys.ibm.ps2.hardware:

So, you could get 800x600 @ 256 colours, depending upon your OS and monitor's capabilities.
