Saved a Compaq Portable, the first model, from the scrap heap today. No one else even knew what it was or even how to open it. :D

It's in OK condition on the outside, but the inside looks great. Better yet, it boots to a prompt for a system disk, which I don't happen to have. Anyone have (or can make) an appropriate system disk they'd like to sell?

It should take any DOS on a 360K disk. If you have/put a 360K drive into any system and format/s the drive (I recommend DOS 5 or below, due to size, though 6.22 will fit, barely) it will work on there. The appropriate DOS for the system is likely 2.x, probably 2.11. I don't have my archive disk online atm or I'd pull a Compaq OEM copy for ya, but that's what you're looking for I wager.

Raven,

I'm glad we could work out a deal for a system disc. The envelope arrived today in good condition.
Inserted the disc, turned on the power button, waited a few seconds, and WHA-LA...

IT FREAKIN' WORKS!

I figured the computer was working when stashed away in the warehouse, but jeeze how long ago was that? And it's not the cleanest warehouse, if you can imagine. Dripping water, rats, dirt...

Can't say how much I appreciate it buddy.

Sincere Thanks,
-Bob

Great! It's tough to get a 5.25" disk from point A to point B without getting data corrupted, and all of the non-boot files on that disk were written by a 1.2MB drive (a risk, heh, but I tested it on my own 360K machine before shipping), so I'm glad it worked out. First thing's first, make yourself a copy, assuming you have blank disks around, heh.

Glad the machine works too - though I'm not too surprised, luggables are pretty damn long-lasting in my experience.
