Which one is "better"?

I have recently purchased two Tandys on eBay, a 1000TX, and a 1000SL/2.

The 1000TX came with a Silicon Valley ADP50T IDD HDD controller, and a healthy Seagate 130.7MB HDD.

I've put the HDD into the SL/2 to see if it would swap over happily, a no brainer...Plug and play.

So I'm wondering, if the TX is a 286, and the SL/2 is an 8086, which one is worth keeping the HDD in, and getting a VGA card for?

The SL/2 is in better shape cosmetically, but both function well.

General opinions on this would be appreciated!

Personally I'd keep the 1000TX out as a "play machine" given the choice. It's just such a weird beast. (Basically a PCjr with a 286 upgrade! And I'm not at all biased by the fact I used to own one.)

I wouldn't buy a VGA card for either one. Sort of the point of an old Tandy is to marvel at its SuperCGA graphics.

I agree at the SuperCGA graphics, I can remember when I owned a real IBM with CGA and looked at Tandy computers in the local rad shack store, at that time they looked super impressive.

BTW, I'm looking to buy an Original Tandy 1000 in nice condition if anyone has one :D

The Tandy Graphics are neat for sure, but I'd rather shell out the 30ish bucks for an 8 bit VGA card than get a (if you can find one for a decent price) EGA/CGA to VGA adapter to run a nicer monitor... This CM5 is just aweful...and SO SMALL.
I can't believe I spent so many hours playing Starflight, F-19 and LHX in front of one during my youth.

Eh, you can get a lot nicer CGA monitors if you take the time to look around, and I agree about the graphics - if you want VGA, I'd just get a 386/486 box and save yourself time and trouble.

For what it's worth the VGA card that AO pointed out uses a Tseng labs 3000. Which was one of the fastest 8 bit VGA's made. just my 2 cents worth. Oh and keep the TX I have one and it is pretty snappy.:p

That is a little steep if ya ask me, Druid6900 sells them in Canada for 25$ plus shipping...if I go that route, that's the one I'm getting.

You might want to note that this is the last one of the 8-bit VGA cards I have left. I had a dozen of these about a year ago but some guy bought 6 the day I put them on the site and the other 5 went as time went on.

I had this last one in my 1000TX for a while, but, after fixing and testing it, I just put the computer on the "Good to go" rack. I haven't even listed the computer on my site yet and I don't really know why. I sure hope I'm not getting nostalgic, that would be bad for business LOL
