I just acquired a July 9th 1986 5150.
Since sources I've seen say it was discontinued in 1987, made me wonder who here has one of the last off the line?
Serial on this one is 20421415150

There were 3.2 million 5150s manufactured which implies that machine is only 2/3 of the way through the entire run. IBM must have been really cranking them out over that last year.

They made a lot of those 5150's. When I was in college in 87-91 the free computer labs were full of dual floppy 5150's tied to super-fast dot matrix printers so you could do your reports.

Was there much of a market niche for the 5150 once they started shipping XTs without hard discs? Even if you didn't want the hard drive, the XT offered more slots and a bigger PSU. It feels like they'd have to significantly discount the 5150 to make it a viable product by comparison.

OTOH, by late in the 5150's lifespan, they had six-in-one cards and HardCards so perhaps I'm overestimating the expandability concerns.
