Why is the music of The Oregon Trail so sped up?

What hardware are you running it on? What version of Oregon Trail are you using?

My guess would be that you are running on a much later system than what that version of Oregon Trail was intended for. Some versions have a bit more flexibility in settings or maybe it is possible to slow the computer down a bit. Can't give useful advice without knowing what is there.

using ms-dos 6.22 and a i486DX2 cpu.

I think you have the 1990 DOS version which lacks any adjustments to run better on faster machines.
Try pressing the Turbo button if you have. If it is connected, it might slow the system down.
Similar to the previous, see if the BIOS lets you turn off clock doubling making it into a 486-33. That might still be too fast but could be closer.
Try the 1992 Deluxe Oregon Trail which having been designed about the time of the DX2 might better handle the CPU.

There are other slow down methods but those are more complex and I will leave such suggestions to those who do it more frequently.
