Windows 2000 large USB drive lockup issue

Breaking out from the Pentium 4 thread - I’ve noticed throughout the years that Win2k always seems to lock up for a short time after a USB device is inserted. The larger the drive, the longer is locks up for before it recovers.

You are plugging a 2TB HD (fat32 or NTFS?) into a Thinkpad T2x that is USB 1, things take time. Does USB 1 have DMA mode, if not that would lock up the system.

Is the drive indicating that it is transferring data after insertion? A 2TB drive would have a FAT taking up 256 MB which take at least 4 minutes to transfer with USB 1.

It is transferring data. Same lockup doesn’t happen on XP though.
