Just curious, anyone here have a working combination of a CD-ROM drive and a controller on any XT class machine? Internal or external, SCSI, IDE, or anything else.

I've seen some people talking about parallel interfaces and scsi controllers, but nothing solid.

Any shot?

Thank you!

For the SCSI side of the aisle, look at http://www.seasip.info/AmstradXT/cdrom.html

Okay, some of the caveats are for the smaller case Amstrad used compared to the full size XT case but the method will be the same.

A SCSI setup will probably be more expensive than a Backpack CD-ROM but the SCSI does offer the chance to add lots of other devices.

You can do the parallel port drives.
You can do internal or external SCSI drives.
You can do proprietary interface drives like Panasonic, Mitsumi
I *think* you can do ATAPI now too with the XTIDE, but I've honestly never tried.

I run an internal Plextor 8X SCSI drive, and I like it.

hello
I have DVD SCSI drive (hp p/n 0950-3398 ), working very well. Controller TMC850
..have a SCSI with caddy (sony cdu561-sc) , but only reading cdrom's after a software init (?), if I remember correct this old drive do not read home burned CDROMs.

No, this won't work. It would require a CD-ROM device driver that would know how to "talk" to the XTIDE card. Could be a fun project though. Perhaps just hacking a driver like OAKCDROM.SYS would suffice?

I started working on that very thing. (CD support with XTIDE) I was writing a driver from scratch.
I'm crazy swamped with other stuff, so it got sidelined. I believe I was able to eject the CD tray via ATAPI, and that's about it. Not so useful yet.

Perhaps this will inspire me to resurrect it...

That would be awesome! I recall reading comments about hoping to get that to work, but never found any comments about it actually working...

Thanks,

Wesley
