Hello,
An older friend of mine had wanted to acquire an IBM 5150 again and I offered the one I had but he declined since I had had it since the late 80's. I am searching for one I could have sent to him and me pay for it as a gift. He mentioned these monitors as he told me he lusted over the 5153 but had a 5151 (which would work as well). Either way however I'm personally looking for an Amber monitor from that era so I could always give him the 5153 I have In place of an amber monitor if somebody has one. Ideally a system in working condition but If it needs some minor work I can have that sorted out. In regards to a keyboard I have a model F I can give him but a compatible keyboard would be nice as well. He's getting up in age (80's) and this is something he mentions to me quite frequently and I think would cheer him up quite a bit. If anyone has extras of anything 5150 I can try and put together a working complete system for him if not a whole set up. Thank you everyone for your time to read this and hopefully I can figure something out for him.

(in a nutshell)
Looking for:
5150
5151, 5153 or compatible amber crt
keyboard (anything that works with it)
some starter software would be nice too but I think I can possibly copy some of mine, would just need some discs.

Again thank you!

Can you tell us what state you are in, would make finding something local easier. Shipping is not kind to older equipment.

I don't have one to offer, but the amber CRT to keep your eyes out for is the Princeton Graphics HX-12. It's styled like the IBM monitors so it fits well with the system and it supports both MDA/Hercules and CGA. (16 grays, er, ambers.) Great to pair with a multi-mode video card like an ATI Graphics Solution.

Atlanta and yeah I definitely agree regarding shipping.

Oh thats great advice! I'll keep an eye out for one of those. I vaguely remember seeing those years back and liking that it looks very ibm oem.

Those old IBM monitors are particularly dangerous to ship since the plastic has gotten very brittle with age. They can be packed very carefully and still arrive with the case shattered.

The 5151 seems lighter than the others, unless it’s my imagination. So maybe it would ship better. I recently picked one up on eBay, make an offer, and it arrived OK as far as the case plastics are concerned.

I have an IBM 5151 that internally had some cracked plastic and the cable management on the bottom is cracked off but for all intents and purposes looks pristine when set up. If you want to chat about it send me a DM.

5151 has very bad design. Heavy transformer is attached to the plastic case using 2 screws.
So in general it is 50% chance that survive or not the transport :D
5153/5154 are safer with shipments.

I disassembled my 5151 and can confirm that transformer is gonna flap around during shipping. I wonder how many cracked during shipping back in the 80's, even with new plastic.
