xerox 820-II working again!!

I felt I must let Chuck know how things are with my xerox 820, after all, it was down to his expert help, and time, that pointed me in the right direction, and helped me diagnose the display problem I had with my machine. It was in fact the 2016p static ram chip, that was faulty. I have taken some pictures to show the result. as shown, I cut through the existing legs of the soldered in chip, then unsoldered each leg from the board, cleaned out all the holes in the board with a stainless needle and hot iron. Next I fitted a new turned pin socket, with gold contacts, once this had been soldered in, the m/b was cleaned all over, the new 2016 was fitted, m/b and everything else reinstalled, I was now keen to see the result, as the picture shows, all is well once again.
so a big thanks to Chuck and the VCF! ..... Brilliant!

Congrats and glad to hear it; you're practically an expert by now.

Don't praise Chuck too much now; he's on a real roll of successes lately and we don't want his head to swell so much that he can't stick it inside of one of his tubas to inspect for pinholes ;-)

Should probably post some photos of a tuba I've been building. I just brazed up a leadpipe brace and a thumbring boss and definitely think I'm getting better with the acetylene torch.

Chuck, should you ever visit the uk, ( that includes any brass band convention in somerset?) I'm gonna fill that tuba with scrumpy... and make sure you drink it all. ........... harry

Hey, whatever works for ya; if you don't mind sacrificing a possibly good chip then cutting the pins is sometimes the neatest way.

Well, he was getting to be quite a curmudgeon until all these recent successes. Now he is back to his mellow self.

I think it's the promise of all that free beer, first in Sweden and now in the UK, with no doubt several kegs for the asking in the US as well...

Hey, whatever works for ya; if you don't mind sacrificing a possibly good chip then cutting the pins is sometimes the neatest way.

Oh, I always cut the pins off to save heat going into the board when removing a chip. I was thinking of the stainless needle to clean the holes; it may have heated the board more than necessary to get the holes clean.

Where would this forum be without him? I like to kid him but we all know he is quite a unique "resource".

Harry, much obliged! I played (Eb bass) in a local brass band for some years--it was a great deal of fun, even if the stupid &*&%$@ cornets got the spotlight most of the time! For those of you not familiar with British Brass Bands, listen to the band on the Beeb. Unique instrumentation and some amazing playing. But if you're going to fill my tuba, I should bring a Bb bass...

Love the sound of a brass choir! I played oboe and saxophone in high school and had a great time too. One of my favorite brass performances is the Empire Brass Ensemble playing Gabrieli's - Sacrae symphoniae, Canzon duodecimi toni. It can be heard here:
