Song: Earl - The 153rd Quickest Gun in the West

The Balad of Irving

The Balad of Irving

The 142nd fastest gun in the west
Frank Gallup

Orig from a vinyl comp called "When you are in love the whole world is Jewish"

probably on a Dr. Demento CD comp.

He also recorded "Son of Irving"

Speaking of potentially offensive to PC sensibilities materials formerly considered humorous, did'ja ever try watching Blazing Saddles with all the N-words bleeped out? It was on last night, but I could only take a few minutes worth before I hadda turn it off. Just didn't make sense anymore, since a major part of the humor is based on Clevon Little's reactions to the word. His wisecracks, jokes, facial expressions, etc. just don't work without it. Personally, I'm more offended by the stereotyping in Black-sploitation movies than what is obviously intended as comedy (or was in 1974).

Na, I've always loved Blazing Saddles. I guess us Aussies wonder what the big deal with the 'N' word is. I cannot stand the 'F' word and if I use it myself I whack myself silly.

Pete Seeger was using the 'N' word when he was part of the Almanac Singers (1941-42) - particularly in "Ground Hog" song which seemed innocent enough which makes me wonder when it became a word endorsing hatred?

The only time I can imagine this occurring recently was in the 60s when Martin Luther King was President and they did that film "In the Heat of the Night" which Sidney Pointer was subjected to indecent treatment until the local cop established who he was. Mississippi Burning with Gene Hackman done in the late 80s seemed to be another account on what was happening to African/Americans during the 60s - we watched this as part of the American History studies in Secondary School.

Geez no wonder I couldn't find it - I'm amazed somebody knows what on Earth I was talking about. I might have being listening to or thinking of "Duke of Earl" when I typed in the subject line! :-o

"Son of Irving" sounds familiar too, I might have heard that song.

Frank Gallup didn't do "Big Bad John" did he? Pehaps it's only a song done in a simular fashion. "Irving" it outright funny though gets me in stiches everytime! :-D

I think your equivalent might be 'ab' or 'abo', if used as a racial or ethnic slur.

Some people were saying that even 'Indigenous Australians' are unhappy with the full blown 'A' word. The problem is 'Indigenous Australians' (which is what I believe they generally prefer to be called as) were divided into Tribes which, had separate languages and conflicts often occurred between tribes. These tribes all have their own names as well, in my region it's felt there were two divided tribes which came under the same umbrella. Occassionally when there's a forum or a general meeting or something, some acknowledgement of the tribal community is mentioned in recognition.
