    Laser 128EX/2 startup issues

Hi, I purchased a 128EX/2 awhile ago and recently checked it out. Taking a look at it, it doesn't fully work but I don't think it's that far off either. When it powers up, you get a beep, the ROM POST banner, and it accesses the drive. Then it usually fills the screen with a consistent...

    Multia VX40 troubleshooting

Re: RAM, I used genuine DEC 8MB that came from other VX40s and tested good last year. Looking at the machine closer, it had had E215 replaced due to Heat Death, but the repair wasn't clean. I'll re-do the repair and see if the machine checks persist.

    Multia VX40 troubleshooting

I was taking a look at an old Multia that's been sitting idle for a long time. It does not boot normally, but I'm able to do a fail-safe boot from the FSL image on floppy. When that boots, it spews a bunch of machine checks on the serial console. Before I write this system off, is anyone able...

Xircom Pocket Ethernet EEPROM unreadable error

Met Retrotech Chris IRL today! He said the EPROM dumps are all from the RJ45-only PE3's.

classic Mac analog board 3.9uF capacitor source

FYI I used one of the above Taitsu caps in the horizontal section of a 9" Apple CRT (forget the model, but it's the monitor for the IIc) to replace a 4uF NP electrolytic there. It worked fine to repair the monitor and we'll see about longevity I suppose.

Xircom Pocket Ethernet EEPROM unreadable error

Thanks for posting this! Any chance you have the model #s associated with each of these? It's likely there's a few bits in there indicating the specific PE3 model. Also, the host portion of the MAC address is just the serial number in hex. So when reprogramming/replacing the EEPROM, it's...

classic Mac analog board 3.9uF capacitor source

The compact Mac analog board versions I've encountered all have a 3.9uF non-polarized electrolytic cap, which is somewhat of a unicorn. You can source a 3.9uF film cap from DigiKey (in USA), but it's over US$3. However I found a cheaper alternative: All Electronics has a 4uF, 250V, 105-degree...

    Anyone good at troubleshooting Multia/UDBs?

The Multia was a mid-90's low-end Alpha desktop machine... maybe one of the first with PCI? Anyway, they were notorious on many fronts, not the least of which were thermal issues. I've got one working unit, but another 2 system boards that are not. At least one of them appeared to have been...

AMI BIOS on Am386SX-40 == no option ROMs?

Hi, I borrowed a generic Am386sx-40 PC from a friend for some ISA NIC boot ROM testing. However, the machine doesn't seem to recognize any card's option ROM, even cards I'm certain work. I gave up on the NICs and even tried my trusty Adaptec 1522A to no avail. The CMOS setup has options to...
