    AST Sixpack 286

Hi, Anybody know anything about this board? Can the memory start anywhere for the 286? Meaning, if you had a 286 that support 3 meg of RAM could you use this to get extended RAM up to 7 meg? I know it trivially supports EMS but what about XMS? Chris

    TRS-80 Model 4 Character Map

Hi, Does anybody have a BITMAP of the TRS-80 Model 4 Character Map? It would help me a lot if you could share it. Thanks, Chris

Best Sound Card Clone for 286

Hi, I have a 286 that I want to put back on the shelf ready-to-go but don't want to use any of my premium 16 bit ISA sound cards. What would be the best clone that is readily available and somewhat inexpensive? Random thoughts appreciated. Thanks, Chris

    Vendex Headstart VGA M-888-VC

Hi, I don’t know specific forum for a monitor but this one goes with a 286 so seemed ok. Anyway, the monitor seems to work great but it keeps shutting off on me, and if I wait a minute and turn it back on it seems to go back on. Anyway, got any ideas on how to fix? Could it be as simple as...

Quick Survey: What version of Dos for XT machines?

Hi, What version of DOS are you all running? I am running DOS 6.22, but wondering if that is the most compatible, best option. I've looked at FreeDOS but wow it seems a bit complicated. I'd appreciate any thoughts. I'm asking for XT machines specifically. Thanks, Chris

Which oscillator in this system is driving the bus and can I change out the can?

There are 3 cans on the CPU board and two cans on the busboard. 18.432 and 16 on the Busboard. We then have 24, 14.31818, 4.7727266. It is a Vendex 888-XT. I am trying to see what can controls the bus and if I can try to switch it out. (I know, I know, all kinds of weird stuff can happen...

BackPack CD-ROM on Vendex 888 with Inboard/386 Trying to Benchmark

Hi, I have a backpack parallel port CD-ROM running on my Vendex. I used the built in motherboard port and also added an EPP/ECP card to try to make it work faster. It claims 2MB/S on the box. Anyway, I would like to test to see exactly what rate I am getting. Can anybody point me to a tool...

    What is this processor?

It says it is 386 to 486 DX4. Any idea who made it?

    Inboard/386 in Vendex Turbo-888 XT

Hi, I am so excited to finally be one of the cool kids with an Intel Inboard/386. It arrived and had pin one missing but I already had a cable I made for my Breakthrough 286 that worked perfectly. The Inboard would not run with the original BIOS, it would not run with the Generic Turbo...

Merry Christmas - XMASS 2022 Composite Slideshow Demo

Hi, Thanks to people I met here I finally made a real x86 slideshow demo with audio. Much of the credit belongs to others (thank you Reenigne for the player that I finally used almost a decade later) and I appreciate them for it. Without further ado here is the DOSBox Capture. (I can do a...

Visualizing the PWM Waveform on a PC Speaker

I hooked up my scope to the output from my computer to the PC speaker. Probe to lead on speaker and ground to the case. Anyway, I thought it was neat to see PWM in action playing back a MOD file from ModMaster so thought I would share.

    ATI Small Wonder Composite Output

Hi, I like my PVC4 card but unfortunately in 80x25 text mode it only puts out monochrome color and the colorburst cannot be enabled. Oddly, you can in graphics mode at that resolution which my guess is because they knew a use case was going to be composite color. Anyway, I am looking at the...

Plantronics 256 Color Mode (Technically Likely Less, but I didn't calculate the pal, I captured it)

Hi, I'm not sure why I didn't post this before but watching 8-Bit Guy's Super CGA Video it occurred to me that there was a mention of an odd 136 color mode and he commented "that must be some kind of composite thing." Well, this made me remember that I played with composite output on my...

    Acumos AVGA2 / Cirrus Logic CL-GD5402 Windows 3.0 Drivers?

Hi, I cannot for the life of me find Acumos AVGA2 (also known as CL-GD5402) video drivers for Windows 3.0. I can't run Win 3.1 because of lack of XMS but would still like to run some kind of Windows. Anybody have the original disks lying around? Thanks, Chris

Vendex 888-XT with Overclocked Breakthrough 286

So I got my Breakthrough 286 going on my Vendex 888-XT using the Generic Turbo XT-BIOS. It is the 12 MHz version. Anyway it has a 24 MHz Oscillator and I swapped it out for a 30 MHz. I think there is probably something else limiting it - but it goes VROOM for sure. Don’t know if it is stable...

    Working on Plantronics Viewer

Hi, I have decoded the Plantronics mode and can successfully make 320x200x16 color images and 640x200x4 color images using QuickBasic 4.5. As you all know POKE's are far too slow to do anything useful. I have an image converter, I know what registers to tickle to get into Plantronics, and I...

Clock Doubler Circuit for 8088 to use 16 Mhz V20

Hi, Clearly, I am not technically capable enough, but that never stops me from wondering. What do you suppose would be involved in making a clock doubler circuit with cache to use a 16 MHz V20 in an 8 MHz (or even 9.54 Mhz) 8088? Can it work like a 486 DX/4 or something like that. In my...

    Digital Vision Computer Eyes Drivers/Software

Hi, I just spent a few hours trying to hunt down the proper software for the Digital Vision Computereyes/RT. I came across the original website on the wayback machine and luckily the drivers are captured there. In order to help others with search engines, I'll list out what is there...

    Vendex Headstart Plus System Disks

Hi, I was asked to capture the system disks and share them, I figured for posterity I would post them here. The archive contains .IMG files and full image scans of the disks. Thanks, Chris
