A way to re-use an IBM PS/2 dead drive

Really neat idea, really good at keeping it simple as far as something like this goes!

    IBM RS6000 model 370 type 7012

In some sheer stroke of luck, I managed to get the disks made, somehow I was able to get the original FDD going, cleaned ribbon cable, replaced a few caps on the interface board, washed the board.. Needed to mkfs my /tmp VG, suspect maybe something was corrupted, bad block, who knows. It worked...

    IBM RS6000 model 370 type 7012

This is good to know, must be something up with the hardware somewhere, will keep digging on... All I can do is insert a disk, and press enter, the smit diag util and umkdskt are doing all the complicated stuffs : ) . Good to know I don't need a flux imager heh, maybe a known good working fdd...

    IBM RS6000 model 370 type 7012

I've yet to pickup a greaseweasle, but do intend to one day, for now just using the old hardware, which is probably the root cause of the issues here for me. Jonathan

    IBM RS6000 model 370 type 7012

I've yet to actually create one the disks, with the floppy drive issues at hand, and I ran into insufficient space on a 1.44m formatted disk when using a drive from another machine. I suspect these need to be on 1.78m formatted maybe. Do you know anyway to capture the disks images as the OS...

    IBM RS6000 model 370 type 7012

I don't but I can probably create some with instructions... The only ones I've seen so far are: Diagnostic Diskette Creation Service Aid This selection provides a tool for creating a set of customized diagnostic diskettes for this system...

    IBM RS6000 model 370 type 7012

I think you are right thought I haven't seen much, there seem to be many 7012 designations; The particular one I have has the CPU on a card, which probably was interchangeable with others. Wish I knew more... Of course, as luck would have it, years ago we all got rid of neat things we're after...

    IBM RS6000 model 370 type 7012

Managed to get the machine up and running. Floppy drive was working, somewhat. I replaced the usual suspects 4.7uf and 10uf caps on it, and it worked for a little bit, but still wasn't booting off the drive. While I did the caps, I noticed the 2nd board had a lot of corrosion on it as well. In a...

    IBM RS6000 model 370 type 7012

Ah that's pretty neat then. I don't think I will be doing any instruction asm coding on these, just tinkering about really. I have a RS6K model 250 here as well, seems to me its speed is about the same, from the same era, and has what you'd typically expect to find one big chip with a...

    IBM RS6000 model 370 type 7012

thanks for confirming there's no expected output during post codes. I managed to find a "bootdisk" which boots to a menu, where I can set the boot order for normal and service mode. It has a shell prompt option as well, however, that requires me to know the existing root password. I tried the...

    IBM RS6000 model 370 type 7012

I have a tape drive I could use, im just not sure how i'd even say hey, 370, boot off that tape drive! I suppose I really need a graphics card in it to see, it has keyboard, mouse ps2 ports, but no gfx! Gah. Tempted to try the XGA2, but I doubt a PC MCA part would work in the RS6k world...

    IBM RS6000 model 370 type 7012

Hello everyone I picked up this up a long time ago, and recently got it to the point it would power on, and seems to boot up. I've connected my terminal to "Serial 1" and after waiting a long time, I see the AIX OS boot and stops at the login prompt, so I'm not able to see the specs. I of...

    Compaq LTE 5300 screen issue

mine does this too, though not as bad - if I place my thumbs on the front plastic bezel near the lcd panel (but not ON the panel) at the 9 and 3 oclock position out from the center, my fingers on the back, sort of gently twist the screen, it snaps back to working. Hopefully that helps for you, I...

Heatsink ideas for pentium pro cpu's

Ah ok, I will have a look for that maybe before spending so much on a SKT 8 cooler. Mine are just 256k 200 mhz ppros, due to cost not going with the 1MB versions! This is going in a IBM PC365 so there is lots of room as the CPU sit alone at the front right (as long as I don't put any super long...

Heatsink ideas for pentium pro cpu's

Thanks very much, I hadn't seen those options before, like the idea of the NEC heatsinks, since the machine is designed for passive cooling, however the HSF combo is good too. I do wish they weren't $40 but probably not going to find a stand alone solution for less! Jonathan
