486 Troubleshooting assistance... data lines all high etc

Hello. I have a Gigabyte GA486-US motherboard, which looks exactly like this: https://theretroweb.com/motherboards/s/gigabyte-ga-486us Cosmetically it's very nice, there has been no battery leakage, so that's always a good start. With CPU, 4 sticks of RAM and post card plugged in I just get...

Western Europe IBM XT clone "Megaboard" in working condition in Germany. 300 Euros

XT Clone System - 300 Euros. Unusual and very large "Megaboard" motherboard from 1985 made by Display Telecomminications Company (or a clone of their board). Electrically virtually identical to the IBM XT. It works fine and has been one of my main 2 XT's, but I've decided to make space by...

    Single-sided 250kb 3.5" Floppy Drives.

This may not belong here as I don't think IBM compatibles ever supported them - too early (or simply not considered), even for the original PC? But I hope to clear up the origin. I have encountered 2x single-head, what appear to be 67.5TPI 250kb floppy drives. The earliest (show below) is a...

Western Europe 2x Mitsubishi ED 3.5" Disk drives (2.88mb).

Here I have 2x Mitsubishi MF256C ED Disk drives (these are the 2.88mb option in your 1990s BIOS and they also read/write 720k and 1.44mb disks!). Quite elusive drives, both are tested and fully working. 80 Euro each or 150 Euros for the pair. I will include an ED diskette with each. Postage at...

Octek PVGA1C 16 bit card in 8 bit XT slot - almost works, jumpers?

Hello. This Octek PVGA1C 16 bit card works - almost - in an XT clone 8 bit slot (but not all slots physically had room for it due to m/b chips located where the 16 bit extension hangs down). Using the factory BIOS that the computer came with (A PC/XT TURBO clone of some kind) I get a 'SYSTEM...

Western Europe 386 DX40 Motherboard with OPTi Local Bus and 486 Socket, working. 40 Euros.

Hello. For sale here is a GMB-786UN Motherboard, 40 Euros plus postage at cost. I'm in Germany. See manual here: https://theretroweb.com/motherboard/manual/gmb-786un-manual-62717358e60fe669607089.pdf It's unusual in that it has an OPTi Local Bus socket (which never really caught on). It has a...

ASUS m/b destroying serial mice with -12V!

I wonder if anyone has experienced this before. I have an ASUS P5A-B Super Socket 7 Motherboard. It was happily running Win 98 the other day when all of a sudden the serial mouse stopped working. I restarted and got the 'no mouse detected message'. Tried another mouse, same thing. Tried removing...

Western Europe Octek 286 and 3x Socket 7 Motherboards, from 10 EURO

Hello. Here are a few motherboards that I have lying around here in Saxony, Germany. Postage is at cost and I'll send anywhere in principle, although it may not be economical to all places. Local people are welcome to come in person and I'll happily show them working before you buy. All are...

    Tribulations reading a PAL16L8

Aim: to replicate (and archive the contents) of an old PAL16L8 chip, program a GAL so that works in the same old hardware. I know this has been discussed before but I'm a bit of a noob and have a specific issue. The hardware concerned is an XT keyboard interface for a Sinclair QL (which had a...

Saving a TMS6110 Phrase ROM to a file.

Just noticed there is a BBC section here. It doesn't look all that busy but I'll give it a try before asking elsewhere! The BBC Model B has by default, 2 empty sockets for TMS speech chips. One of the spaces is for a TMS5220, which is the speech processor. The other is the so-called Phrase ROM...

Infrared in the 90s, other uses?

My Pentium 1 Laptop has an infrared port on one side. I do have distant memories of infrared connections in the past, with certain mobile phones and of course use as a serial port for sending data to a printer etc. But are there any other uses for it that might be fun today, e.g. is there any...

Gateway Solo 2100 Laptop battery issue

This is really a general battery query, but is from a 1997 Gateway 2000 laptop with a P133 CPU so sort of fits here too. This is the internals of the battery pack. It's made up of 4 pairs of cells. I had to replace 2 horrible leaky cells, as you can see. I then manually charged each of the cell...

    RGB Monitor and Scart-ifying it.

This colour RGB monitor is branded Highscreen and is dated 1985 inside. I think Highscreen were a German brand. I suspect it's a clone/rebrand of something else? (any info on what that might be is welcomed). This is mainly about the scart connection though... On the rear it has a cut-out unused...

Lo-Tech EMS as a RAM disk on 5160?

I have a Lo-Tech 2mb EMS ISA card that I picked up for cheap and fixed (all the 4 RAM chips were shorted and pads had been ripped - perhaps a previous owner plugged it in the wrong way round). It works now and I have the LIM driver for it in my config.sys - it also passes the tests in the...

    Innoventions 'SideCard' RTC module

A nice little surprise in a recently purchased very clean 5160 was this Innoventions 'SideCard' RTC device that fits into and around a slot and leaves enough space for another card to fit on top. Well designed, and I can imagine there would have been demand for it at the time from people with no...

Tecmar Inc '1st Mate' card, looking for info.

This is a Tecmar 1st Mate multifunction card. I can find details about the larger (more RAM) Captain version, but nothing on this model. Anyone know where I can find details about the switch/jumper settings etc? Thanks.

Help to ID multifunction card (RAM/RTC/Serial)

I just wondered if anyone had seen one of these before. It's a clone multifunction card with 384k RAM, RTC and serial/game port connectors. Solder side is marked 'WTF' (which was also my line of thought when I saw the battery damage!) and there is also 'WTF 821115'. It has a lot of bodges due...

    Unidentified XT Clone m/b

Posting in case anyone recognises this board. It's a generic XT clone with 7 x 8bit ISA and 5 EPROM sockets. The BIOS contains the strings "(C) COMPUTER TURBO version 2.0 1985 International Business System" and "(C) PC/XT TURBO 8 MHz SYSTEM". On the solder side it has "PMC' and separately...

    Help to identify PSU cap

In an XT clone PSU I have a couple of these filter caps on the AC side... They are marked CM.1K / 250VAC / TSE. The 250VAC is clear and the TSE part is probably the maker, but what about the CM.1K? 1kuF, 1knF? CM is possibly the case type designation. Thanks.
