Can’t get direct cable connection to work

If you get a serial cable and null modem adapter, you can send the slave program from Fastlynx or Laplink over it, using debug or command line.

For command line here is what you would type/run

mode COM1:9600,n,8,1,p
ctty COM1

Hmm. I think I'd need a tutorial on how to do that, this sort of stuff is all new to me. I thought you could get some serial cables that are pre-wired for a null modem? Then again I don't have a serial cable of any kind and I also don't quite understand what a null modem is...

Null modem adapter changes the RX and TX so the 2 machines can talk. You just fit it to end of a regular serial cable.

Here's a full cable so you dont need to buy 2 things.

Edit well you would need a gender changer for that... Here's the right one, and its cheaper!

something like this?
What built-in program would I use to get the WinBook to receive the files from one of my newer systems?

You can send and receive off the newer machine. Go with the 2nd cable, its cheaper and don't need a gender changer. But yes, that would be the gender changer required for the first cable.

You would just need to be at the dos prompt to receive the slave program. After that you will have it stored on the Winbook, and can use serial or parallel. Parallel is much faster.

Thanks for the link - do you know how exactly I'd send the files though? Would it work through DCC and if so, what would the WinBook detect?

They would be the same cables needed for DCC. I suggest using this route instead of built in DCC.

Yes, but my question is how the machines will talk. I'd assume that they wouldn't just mount up each other's hard drives.

Thats what the slave and program do. They create a DCC. You would load the software you like to use on the newer machine, and send the "slave" over the serial port, using 2 simple dos commands. Works like a ftp program, somewhat.

Thanks, what program would I use to do that? Which DOS commands? Pretty new at this sort of thing.

That should be the trial version. It's still available so, cant link to a full version.

The dos commands I posted earlier in the thread. I perfer it over laplink because you can use multiple different ways to transfer files, including using that null modem cable and a usb to serial adapter on a modern machine.

Ok, so, just to make sure I'm understanding:
I'd install FastLynx on a newer system with a serial or parallel port, then connect the newer and older machines. Then the newer machine will send a program through the cable to the older machine that saves direct to the older machine's hard disk? Then that program will allow me to transfer files through? That's the part I'm unclear on.

Ok, so no software is required to be on the older machine at all to do this? That should work.

MS-DOS 6 comes with INTERLNK/INTERSVR. Works with both serial and Laplink parallel cables.

I'm pretty sure the WinBook has DOS 6, will take a look at that as well. Either way, I'm buying a laplink/null modem cable. Which is faster - Serial or Parallel? Pretty sure it's serial but just want to confirm.

As I stated earlier, Parallel is way faster. Serial works, but if I had to transfer 100's of MB I always reach for the parallel cable. Upside with serial you can transfer over the slave client. Best to have both imo.
