Cbm dual drive 3040 disk - two red lights

Colin,

Yep, that's one of the test programs we used. There is another one that we used as well. Both passed if I remember correctly - but there are so many posts to read...

Just to point out that in Commodore BASIC 2, in line 20 there needs to be no space between the word INPUT and #1.

On my 3016 with a 4040, I get the response

73 CBM DOS V2 0
0
Colin,
Good catch with INPUT#1 typo.
I have a 4040 also and that is what it displays also, but I tried with the VICE emulator set to 3032 and 3040 drive and it displays 0, OK, 0, 0 so I'm not sure what Desperado's will display.

I've tried a few experiments and managed to replicate Desperado's response from the program of

0 0 0

if I run the programme very shortly (seconds) after the 4040 has been powered up.

On my working 3016/4040, I get the

73 CBM DOS V2 0
0

response as above once the 4040 has been on for 20-30 seconds.

I guess we have a problem here as we don't know

a) if the IEEE port is working
b) if the cable works
c) if the electronics in the 3040 is working
d) if Desperado has the right (SS/SD or DS/SD) disks

There's been some awesome electronic work on this thread but there's still a lot of unknowns.

The purchase of a SD2PET or PET Disk Max 2 would at least rule out the IEEE port, and give a lot more flexibility for the use of the 8296 mentioned.

Colin.

I said this way back in post #528 :

"Since you are working with the PET a lot it could be worth you getting an SD2PET, because, although you might like the vintage disk drive better, it is a good way to get programs into the PET via the SD card, but also it can be used as a tool to confirm if the PET's IEEE interface is working properly (aside from those diagnostic IEEE-488 port tests)"

But, in really long threads like this, the information tends to get lost in the past.

Gents, Desperado has stated that he intends to move the machine and its disc drive on, so I would think he prefers to spend less, rather than more, on this system.

But, he appears to be working on PETs a lot, so he could still use one, unless after his experiences with this one & drive he never wants to own & repair another PET again.

Dave_M is kind enough to send me a PET sd card .... So I think I'll buy from him and then I'll use it for future repairs!

I have an extra PETdisk Max that I am sending to Desperado for the cost of postage. He will use it to check out the PET and keep the Max for future work on his other machines.

He has learned so much about electronics from daver and all the others that I hope he continues fixing all his PET equipment even the difficult 3040 if he wishes.

Very generous of you dave_m, if I recall correctly that device can be daisy chained with a real drive unlike say the SD2PET, so that's a great asset for someone who already has a genuine drive, whether working or not.

The happiest ending would be to see the drive and computer working together but these are the most difficult of circumstances to be working in with the main participants not even in the same country and I applaud both Daver2 and his 'team' and Desperado for everything they have already managed to achieve.

I have the exact same setup, I had loads of trouble get this working, but now it's working excellent. Mostly coz I didn't know how to use it, and the lack of a working floppydisk.

1. Start your diskdrive let the leds go black all three.

2. Start the computer.

3. Put a working disk in drive 1

4. Then type
OPEN 1,8,15
hit Return
5. Type
PRINT#1,"i1"
hit Return
6. Now you should hear if the drive react and if you look at your drive and the middle led is bright, your floppydisk is bad.

I had that issue and I succeeded to make new ones with a PC and my kryoflux with some magic.

7. If it's not and stays out type
LOAD"$1",8
hit Return

Now you should hear it read the disk. If led is still of and you got a ready prompt.
Just LIST se what files is on there

This is my first PET computer, I'm actually an Amiga guy, but got this for free a few days ago, and it's now in an amazing condition after Clean up etc. Next for me is to uppgrade the 3040 to a 4040 and the roms in my 3016 to Basic 4.0 with 2534 roms
