Hello everybody, it's been a while! :) I decided it was about time I revisited this forum and made a few posts.

I picked up a Compaq LTE 5300 laptop for a few bucks earlier today, and was surprised by its condition. Apart from a loose cover over the PCMCIA slots, the thing looked and ran like new. I fired it up and found that it had WFW 3.11 and DOS installed. After playing around with it for a bit, I went on HP's site and found that there was an updated BIOS ROM, so I put the update on a diskette and booted up the laptop with it, updating the ROM with Compaq's utility. It backed up my current BIOS before updating, and said that it had successfully updated the system ROM. However, after restarting, I found that the system now hangs during the startup process. Ctrl-alt-del has no effect, and even the power switch is rendered useless. The only thing I can do is unplug the laptop. Since I can't boot the computer, I'm wondering how to go about restoring the BIOS from the backup on the update disk. If needed, I can post a pic of the screen the system hangs on. Thanks in advance for the help.

The latest BIOS release for the LTE 5000 series (7.32) has a bug that causes the extremely long pause on boot. If you sit and wait, eventually it boots up fine. The fix is to downgrade the BIOS to the previous version, 7.20, which works fine.

I originally suspected this, but I left it running for 10 minutes or so to check for that very bug and got no response from the machine.

Sorry for digging this old thread up, but I ran into the same problem albeit randomly. Turns out, the PLCC IC which contains the BIOS is corrupt and needs reflashed outside the laptop with a programmer.
