I gotcha. Again, I’m not sure how we got them as I don’t think my parents ever owned an IBM.

Datapoint systems with 8" floppy disks DID use "IBM-labelled" diskettes. IBM invented the floppy disk, but Datapoint was the first commercially-available computer system to offer them. The IBM label (on the jacket) was common ... as long as the diskettes were 'soft-sectored' -- as most were -- they could be soft-formatted for use with a Datapoint.

Proof, please. Like the product announcement, date and what drive they were using.

I would be VERY surprised if they were released before the products using Memorex floppy drives, which came out before the
Shugart SA900

Also, there were products built using Mylar floppy media in the 60's. IBM was the first to use jacketed media.

Datapoint's drives were Shugart ... so, if Memorex preceded Shugart on the market, a Memorex OEM may have preceded Datapoint. I only know that Datapoint was the first commercially-available customer for the Shugart drives.

So I’ve been looking to sell a Datapoint 1500 that boots up and it has the Datapoint dot matrix printer that does turn on, as well. Has the cables and the 8in floppy boot up. I can’t find any past sales on eBay and do know this is pretty rare from the research I’ve done so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Dear Laura, I programmed Datapoint Systems for 5 years between 1977 and 1982. I would be happy to get such a system again. I am a swiss citizen, living near Zürich. Is your 1500 still available and in full functionality without any damages? Best regards Christian

Hi Christian.

would you happen to still have software / documentation for that system ? I am located in Koblenz/Aargau and have the exact same setup here...
Jos Dreesen

Dear Jos, what a miracle!! It would take 20 minutes to meet you there. Another colleague lives in Full, he programmed with me as well, maybe he has some software. I would apreciate a revival with all this stuff, so please contact me again! I suppose you speak german? It would be much easier for me. Glad to hearing from you soon and best regards.
