DEC units on ebay

Yeah - there's some pretty deep-pocketed collectors out there, so it doesn't surprise me a whole lot. The 11/05's generally tend to go for big bucks normally anyway and the VT05 is just so rare that I was tempted to jump on it myself... but there's just no safe way to ship something like that.
Exactly, at each and "most" collector scenes. Price now on something "rare" is insane... But hey, listings like this if you are lucky, geographically are nicey nice! :p

For the record, almost never the midwest by me :p Wish just once it was... I most likely be there next day with a rental box truck. Meh.

I am not surprised by the 11/05. The VT05 seems a bit high, but obviously that's just me. Someone considered it a value. I'll live with my VT-102.

The VT05 with the 11/05 goodies goes to London, Ontario. Hopefully I can get it up and running ultimately.
The price was pretty high for me as well but as you guys mentioned, the seller's location is the most critical factor here. So I decided not to wait further this time.

Yeah - I've got a VT-102 as well... actually, it's been pieced together from 3 different terminals. It's got a nice charm to it and I love the design.

Hope to get a nice VT100 someday (they're quite a bit different inside).

But you saved on the shipping and possible damage to anything. Ok, you had to drive. But I would rather drive and pick it up myself. I drove 12 hours (one way) one time to pick up an 8e and 2 RK05s with rack. I think you will get the 11/05 up and working just fine. Please let us know on your progress.

Wow - Congrats!

Great to see another DEC / PDP enthusiast here in Canada :)

Yes, I am going to pick it up myself to avoid any damage. BTW, I also save on the custom fees (~20%), though I still need to pass the border with the stuff in my car.
You probably will hear more questions from me down the road since I am a software engineer with a little experience in electronics but with a huge desire to take the system to the point when I can run RT-11 programs.

probably not on the current topic... Does anybody know how hard it would be for an experienced technician to fix the "VT05 does not pass the loop-back test from the communication port" issue?

Yes, I believe you will need that special loopback connector for this to pass. Does it pass other tests? I have never seen or worked with a VT-05 so forgive me if I ask a stupid question.

Just a word of caution as I transport stuff between USA and Canada often in my car... once you're above a certain dollar amount, they'll ask you to come inside and pay customs duties / taxes - especially if you have a receipt.

The last trip I came across with about $1500 of DEC gear and while I had a friendly chat with the border guard who was quite curious about everything, they still made me go inside and deal with the paperwork.

Perfect. It seems you guys believe this is not a hardware issue. I will find the loopback connector and give it a try once I get the terminal at my disposal.

Thanks Chris and Dave for the tips. It makes sense for me to arrange the local pickup during the VCF East event then, so I can tell to the border guard that I took my old computer stuff for the show...

Don't use the word 'vintage' computer. It is an 'old' computer - for spares, repair or scrap...

Dave
...whatever you do, do not mention "Museum"- because now it becomes a commercial transaction! I have friends who learned this the hard way...

Guys, one more tech question (or two)... did you get the capacitors recapped on your PDPs before the first plug in? Any particular location(s) to be served first?

I think most of us have reformed the large capacitors in the power supplies of our DEC machines. The brief explanation of reforming is to apply the rated working voltage of the capacitor through a large resistance to limit the current to a few milliamps.

When I get back to a computer I can reference a post about reforming that’s in the DEC forum.
