Ok...so i picked up a desktop model gateway2000 (p5-60) in great shape....but heres the problems. Upon power up...cmos dead and displays "operating system no found" along with irq for pci video adapter on slot 2 not initialized...so I tore it apart and it has a dallas rtc (non socket) and 2 hdds. So I plugged in a cf to ide adapter...but even that says operating system not found (I tried 3 all with dos installed) I plugged the drives into a seperate pc and one says "no basic rom"
And the other says disk io failure...
I get both drives can be bad...but thr cf to ide not working? With 3 previously working did cf cards I find off...any thoughts on if the dead rtc would cause this?

The Dallas RTC battery being flat can cause a machine to not work properly, since the battery is also used to hold the CMOS settings. You'll want to get that sorted out before troubleshooting further or you'll just be wasting your time.

Shame that it's not in a socket, but it's not difficult to remove it, add a socket and install a new one. You can also rework the existing one and add a battery holder for a CR2032.

Yea i wondered about that. I'll have to get a new solder sucker or desoldering set. But yea I'll have to look into fixing that first

I'd recommend a desoldering gun rather than those spring loaded junkers. Desoldering braid is another option, it just take a lot longer to remove large pinned chips.

The spring loaded types can rip pads off the board, especially if the solder mask is damaged or the pads and traces have a lot of time on them.
