Help with Sergey's 8-Bit FDC and Serial Port board.

What does it say on the ROM on your controller ?, Is it an ATMEL AT28C64B ?, If it is you can use XTIDECFG.COM from the XUB download site to flash the ROM in situ and preferably do it on your 5150.
Let me check. Can't flash in 5150 because POST fails.

Disable the ROM on the controller, Does the 5150 post successfully then ?, If it does once the 5150 has booted RE-enable the ROM and try flashing the ROM.

I put Sergey's card in the XT. No F2 comes up. The settings give a D0000 ROM message or C0000 ROM reading. Some settings go to post but don't give the F2 screen.

So, assuming one cause of the problem, we can rule out the IBM 5150 motherboard.

Presumably, the 'C0000 ROM' was seen when you had Sergey's card set to C0000.

Common between the IBM 5150 and IBM 5160 testing is the CGA card (you move it between the two machines). It would be good to disprove it as the cause.

But I'm now leaning towards what Malc highly suspects, the card. Something about the card, that results in the symptom being seen in your IBM 5150 and IBM 5160, but not in the XT clone. Hardware or software? Did you try what Malc suggested in post #42 ?

I managed to get a 1.44 Mb Backpack working with the help of a member who sent me the drivers on a 5.25" floppy. Have mTCP running on the 5150 which the goal.

Disabled the ROM and PC boots
So now you should Re-enable ( With the PC running ) and try Re-Flashing the ROM using XTIDECFG.COM, You must do this in your 5150 or 5160, I suspect it will either succeed or fail with an error, If it fails post a screen shot of the error.

How do I re-enable the ROM with the 5150 running?

Simply Move SW2:1 back to the ON position, Obviously be very careful not to slip with the tool you use. Give yourself plenty of room by arranging the FDC so that there is nothing in the slots next to the FDC component side. It can be done quite easily but carefully.

Will try that so.

Have you tried a Gotek FD emulator? LCD mod on that and it’s great alternative to old floppies. Couple that with a Greaseweasel to capture images from other floppy drives and you’ll have a great system.
I've bought a Gotek and am using it inthe XT clone. I think I've installed a 1.44 floppy ms-dos but can't boot from the gotek.

I'm having difficulty getting the gotek to work. What are the pin settings for a 5150? How do I get image files onto drive? I keep getting error 34.20220909_170704[1].jpg

I now have an xt-ide and xt-fdc set as d0000 and e0000 respectively. The system boots but no f2 screen appears for the xt-fdc, goes on to boot from the hdd and A: fdd is accessible.

With the xt-ide removed, the system boots to A: drive without the F2 screen.

With the xt-ide installed if I press "a" quickly it boots from A: drive. Still can't get to the FDC bios to change disk size.

Recapping:

- Note that if your IBM XT ever displays 'C0000 ROM' or 'D0000 ROM' or 'E0000 ROM', or something like that, it is a ROM error, and it needs to be investigated, because something is wrong. Yes, it would have been good if IBM had appended the word 'error' after the 'ROM' bit. Multiple possibilities, but for example, I can provoke a 'E0000 ROM' error by having both my XT-IDE and XT-FDC cards set to have the ROM start at address E0000 (i.e. there is an address conflict).

- It is noted that you see the "Press F2 to run ..." message when the subject card is in your DTK XT clone. The problem is somehow related to the IBM 5150.

- I see that the last suggestion was for you to reflash the BIOS on the subject card. Discussed in post numbers 51 through 54. You have not indicated that you tried that.

Based on the thread title, you do not have an XT-FDC card. You have a 'ISA Floppy Disk and Serial Controller' card. Best to refer to the card as that so as not to cause confusion. What is common between the cards is the BIOS: Sergey's Multi-Floppy BIOS (see [here]).

With the xt-ide removed, the system boots to A: drive without the F2 screen.
And confirm again that:
- You are seeing Sergey's Multi-Floppy BIOS display its banner okay - see [here].
- The bit that is not happening is 1. the screen then clears, then 2. at the top of the screen, "Press F2 to run ..." message displayed.

So, is that with only two cards fitted in your IBM 5150, the CGA card and the 'ISA Floppy Disk and Serial Controller' ?
