The Amiga had similar restrictions, so you might be able to use the plipbox (https://github.com/cnvogelg/plipbox). Alternatively, there is also a plip2slip solution. The advantage compared to using SLIP directly is that the serial link can run at a much higher speed (most USB-serial adapters support at least 2 Mbps).
