No idea what it is. Looks like its not a full machine but some kind of expansion box. Post some decent picture of the front and back with close ups of the part numbers. Connectors tell us a lot and you haven't snapped them.

Looks drive unit from a Displaywriter a wordprocessing / gen purpose office computer. No graphics. The original displaywriter software would have been used on this and terminal emulation 3270. Not ibm dos but of the same time as the ibm 5150 pc. this would appear in the series /1 catalog I bet.

I thought that at first, but its not!. Look at the announcement letter in my post a above. Its a System/23 with an 8085CPU and on-chop Basic so may not need a disk drive....

As has said it is not a Displaywriter System (Machine Type - 6580). Nor was a Displaywriter a "gen purpose office computer", it was a dedicated word processor. Displaywriter did not have an operating system as such. The system control program and application software were essentially not divisible.

BTW, I can't see what this has to do with Series/1.

There apparently was a version of CP/M-86 that could be shoehorned into a Displaywriter--and some third-party programs, such as VEDIT were also available for the platform. But, as you say, it has nothing to do with Series/1.

IBM Displaywriter had CP/M-86 and UCSD p-System and almost but not quite MS-DOS (the BIOS was ported but MS-DOS was not released as an official product).
I was the Branch Specialist back then and although CP/M-86 was indeed available from a third-party and I heard that and UCSD p-System was too, I never saw either in use.

We have found two references to actual use of CP/M-86 and UCSD p-System. For several months I thought too the p-System was a product without ever being delivered/used on the Displaywriter, but we also found a reference to someone who saw it in action on the Displaywriter.

I will try to track down the references and follow-up here.

Stefanie - I just came across your Vintage Computer post from 2013 wanting info on your IBM 5234 unit…do you still have it? I know all about the 5234 as I was the IBM industrial designer on the project in 1979-80.

We have a pair of 5324s at LSSM that we'll be looking into restoring soon. We have system units and monitors, but I don't know if we have the keyboards. Would you happen to know of any that might be available?

Hello everyone. I came across this very computer. Complete with monitor and keyboard in working condition (can't confirm floppy drives as I have no 8" diskettes). It also has the printer but that one is in rough shape, might need some love to get it working.
Might be looking to sell it or maybe exchange it. I don't have enough room for it.

Where are you located?...

Hi rubb, and welcome to the fed. I'm from Italy and I own a rare-condition IBM 5362, a big brother of your cute 5324. If you need any support, don't hesitate to contact!

Hello Robic, thank you for your kind offer. As of now, I'm still the owner and have grown to like the "little" fella. I've written some basic code on it and I've had quite a lot of fun with it in the last few weeks. I already found the operator and service manual for the 5324 but am missing some programs for it. Do you by any chance own any and could send them my way? What part of Italy are you from? I also own some other sys32 stuff, but haven't gotten it working yet. I'm missing some knowledge and would appreciate any input you might be willing to share with me.

Hello Rubb, you're welcome, I'm always free for helping someone. Glad to hear that your little fella is working properly. I'd recommend to you, for saving a lot of money and precious time, to download some floppy images of your desired programs and upload it on the machine via adapters. For example, in this post of mine, I finally decided to ask support to the internet, because 8 inch floppies are almost extinct and I got crazy by searching the one I needed for my "big" fella! Of course, I would like to share messages and this stuff with you, so for any need--> roberto.chichiarelli@gmail.com
