Minor problem with New Posts feature

I seem to have problems with the New Post feature, which I usually click when I first come to the site. I seems to not update correctly. It used to work like this. Click "new posts", shows all the threads with new posts, then after I've read some, If I click it again it shows just the threads with new posts since I've last clicked new posts.

Now it seems to carry on showing posts from before, and indicate that I've read some of them by the links not being in bold. But, some threads that I've read, are marked as unread, even though there are no new posts.

Plus some threads that have new posts, don't show up at all when I first hit "new posts". Sometimes I haven't realized someone has replied to a post I've made for days.

I know people have had problems with email notifications since the site crashed, I wonder if the problem is further back in the forum software. Or perhaps It's just me. Anyone else had this problem?

I use the "Whats New" button seems to show new postings ok.

I don't seem to be having the problem you discribe with the New Posts feature.

New Posts does not work here the way the VB developers intended. I have seen this exact problem on other sites with the same version of VB. So I yoosta think it was a problem with this version of VB.

However, I've since found several sites with this same version where New Posts works flawlessly. The Organ Forum is a great example.

So now I'm in the "this site's configuration is wrong" camp.

The only way to ensure that you actually know about most new posts is to make sure to read every post that shows up as "new" in one session, and hope that no one posts anything you want to read before your session times out. Even then you can miss some.

The session timeout might have gotten changed in the restore. New posts only shows threads updated since your last visit. But 'last visit' could be each time you load a page. It's doesn't know when your visit ends. So there is a timer. After n minutes of inactivity from your browser session (via cookie), it assumes your visit ended and resets the new posts reference.

Do like I do. New posts and browse through reading what you want. Then when done, mark all threads read (link in top bar on new posts page).

I have noticed that issue before the site crashed. Typically if there are multiple pages on "New Posts" and you've spent time reading/posting the threads, when you go to page 2, the session has timed out and you just end up with the "New Posts" since you're last read/post. Exact algorithm, I've never fully understood. So what I usually do is open each page, to get the best equivalent to a snapshot, then go through the whole lot.

But now it seems to be worse. There are some threads I've just read, and when clicking "New Posts" again, it indicates they are unread, but I visit them, and there are no new posts.

E.g:

I've just read VERAULT's post on borrowing a PET keyboard. I come back, hit "New Posts" and the thread is still shown as unread (Actually tried 3 times). This doesn't always happen. Sometimes they're marked as read, it's inconsistent.

Also I appear to be missing thread replies. This could just be down to me though. I will try the mark as read, and today's posts links.

Here's another example. Here I'm the last poster in the two indicated threads, ones bold, the other not:
