New manufactured USB floppy drives don't read 720kB floppies.

I just picked up a Sabrent labeled USB floppy drive. The bottom of the drive claims that the drive is a FD-05PUB with a date of Jan 2011. I have had other FD-05PUB that would read 720kB floppies; this new one won't. Contacted customer support and they confirm that the drive will only read 1.44MB floppies.

I post this here since questions about 720kB floppies not being readable have happened several times in the past. Redesigned drives that lose useful features while retaining the same part number are a great inconvenience.

Yup, to shave a few cents, the drives are getting a haircut. Some Samsung legacy floppies are like that also--no 720K support. A shame really, because DS2D is far more reliable than DSHD when it comes to media.

But if you can't find the blank media any longer, why support it?

Thankfully my Sony USB drive reads 720k disks. It won't format them though, and I am weary of writing data to them.

Well if anybody needs any disks formatted in large quantity, send your 720k's to me along with a case of Mountain Dew and I will format and return, both the disks and empty cans so you can at least get the deposit back too. :)

I always buy IBM USB FDDs. They work 100%. Plenty of those around on eBay and Craigslist.
