Newly aquired Macintosh II's from freecycle!

Well thanks to wife, yes the wife; I have 3 Machintosh II's. They have been aquired along with a 600e CD Drive from uk freecycle. She found them, and collected them! Fantastic!

They were advertised as working, but alas this is not quite the case; but hey they were free so can't complain. The monitor doesn't switch on, or at least the switch feels spongy and has not noticeable click to it, so could just be a faulty switch.

The top SI switched on for a moment, produced a hard drive clicking type noise then powered off leaving a nice electrical smell behind. That one will need some work then!

The middle Machintosh II makes all the right noises and may actually be working, if only I could see it, and the bottom one has no video card so I havn't checked that yet.

I have never owned a Mac before, and where these are concerned there seems to be little in the way of components available, on eBay or otherwise here in the UK. I guesss they were not hot sellers here.

I will aquire a VGA adaptor from the eBay US site so I can test them, or try fix that CRT.

It's a nice find but quite busy at the moment so don't know when I will get a more detailed look.

I bet the blown SI was probably filter caps in the power supply, seems to be a common thing with all these old computers, caps don't age gracefully, but if you are handy with a soldering iron, its a fairly easy fix.

I would get yourself one of the MAC to VGA adapters with the switches on it, typically it takes some fiddling to get a picture on a modern "PC" monitor from an old MAC, so try all the settings. I have found the switch-less MAC to VGA adapters really only work on the more modern VGA "aware" Macs (like late PPC or early G3 and newer, typically, but as always YMMV).

Congrats on the find. Now I have to find out why vintage computers seem to never make it into my local thrift store and recycling center.
