Hi all

I've got one of these slabs where I've already replaced the caps (the sound box included), PRAM battery (the old one still had 2.8V left after 20 years!) and a seized fan.

I wanted to ask for some advice regarding the PSU as I feel its impending doom in my guts. Are there any modern replacements available? Is it enough to just recap it or is other maintenance required? Reading this page it seems to have its fair share of issues: http://heller.no-ip.org/~heller/NeXT/power_supply/power_supply.html

There are NOS PSUs on eBay, would it be recommended to buy one while stocks last? I guess those might need new caps too but at least the other components are free from any abuse...?

I also see that there are new floppy drives available. I haven't serviced the drive in my unit. Do these suffer from the same problems as the Macintosh self ejecting drives, dried grease and crumbling gears?

Thanks for your help

The NeXT slab PSU's are a real pain to open/recap, it's so tightly packed. I took a peek inside mine but gave up. Would love to hear from someone how hard it actually is to do and how the original caps measured.

As long as it runs I'll keep using it and hope for the best; at least the load on it should be greatly reduced now that I run the machine with a ZuluSCSI instead of a spinning SCSI disk drive. I also added some heatpaste between the case and the PSU's bottom plate hoping that it would help.

My mono-slabs floppy drive only needed a clean and the eject gear was still intact, can't say I really use it awnyway!
