PC bay rails are they all standardised?

well I currently have 2 pentium 1/2 era generic pc cases that I cant add drives to because they use those rails instead of screws to secure drives. Its convient and all but when you don't have any extra rails and want to add a drive its a pain. The only ones I see on ebay are for a compaq 5000 and a dell but I have no idea of these things are standard and work on any PC.

They aren't. Even with the same manufacturer, they normally aren't.

This annoyance exists even today.

Most of my generic AT cases and generic AT rails are all interchangeable.
Except my NEC PowerMate - using standard rails leaves it offset funny - really annoying.

If I see a Pentium case with rails, I find another case (this happened just last week)

I've ended up making rails from sheet plastic and/or metal. It's not too hard if you've got the tools. They vary all over the place. HP Vectra boxes for the P1 and P2 minitowers look the same from the outside and can even interchange case parts, but one requires special drive rails and the other (P2) doesn't. The case fan is even set up differently; on one it's attached to the back wall of the case (P1), but it's attached to a plastic removable duct on the P2.

Just keeps life interesting...

There indeed are a huge number of different types of rails, but for an unbranded P1/P2-era whitebox case, my first thought would be the Enlight type. Those cases (and generic copies of them) were really popular during that period.

Commodore must have used Enlight cases to build the Amiga 4000T, they use the same drive rails.
