It is probably time for a gentle reminder about forum etiquette. Some of us have been here since the beginning of time, and others are new. However, it benefits all of us if we understand the basic rules. And so, without further delay or unnecessary wordiness, here is a gentle reminder.

Thou Shall Keep Relatively Close To Topic

There are over 40 different areas to post to. You should be able to find an appropriate area related to your topic of discussion. There are even four areas in the 'Completely off Topic' area for any discussion that doesn't relate to vintage machines. Please familiarize yourself with the different areas and use them. Remember, this is "The Vintage Computer Forum."

Thou Shall Contribute Something Meaningful

To put things in engineering terms, we value a high signal to noise ratio.
If you are taking less than 30 seconds to make a post, then you are probably doing something wrong. A post should be on topic, clear, and contribute something meaningful to the discussion. If people read your posts and feel that their time as been wasted, they will stop reading your posts. Worse yet, they may head off elsewhere and then we lose members of the community for no good reason.
It is ok to throw in the occasional one-liner - we are all human. But let's get serious about what we are posting. If this place devolves into another meaningless chat room, then we all lose.

Thou Shall Be Polite

There will always be disagreements. But it should not turn into rudeness. We are all here voluntarily. (Admin's note: I have a particularly low tolerance level for flaming and other rude behavior.)
Conduct yourself as you would at any other place where people come together to discuss their hobby.

Other Suggestions

- Use Google, books, or other definitive sources.
- Spelling and grammar are not rated, but they do make a post easier to read.

Up to this point the moderators have been doing an excellent job of moving posts around. We reserve the right to delete threads and posts outright. Users who habitually start off-topic threads will be warned and dealt with privately.

Thanks to our moderators for pulling this together.

Feel free to chime in with your thoughts! :)

As moderators, we all hope that our duties will be confined to a role as 'spam police', kicking only the most obvious of OT, etc. posts. Please don't make it necessary for us to determine whether or not your post 'belongs' here. The only way this thing works is if we all police ourselves (yes, I'm including myself, almighty 'delete' button on not).

I bet that was meant towards me..lol

Seriously however:
This was a very good idea. I think a lot of younger people are getting into old computers, so it was a good idea to remind them to do right.
Although, I would have placed more emphasis on spelling and grammar.
Erik, I think it would be a good idea to make flood control at least one or two minutes.

It wasn't directed at anyone. If I have a problem with someone here, they know it. ;)

I can't remember where I have it set now, but it's pretty long for reasonable use. Probably a minute. . .

So are you saying that if it's found via Google, then it must be a definitive source? ;)

Oh that was too funny ...

I actually drafted those rules, so I'll explain what was meant ..

There are a lot of questions around here than can easily be answered by a quick search. The original line posted is:

- Use Google, books, or other definitive sources.

That's not saying that Google is the only source you should use, but yes, it's a pretty good source.

A lot of clutter can be cut out with just a minimum amount of research. While I'd like everybody to own a copy of every good book ever published, Google has to do for most of us. :)

That's a funny one - things have quietened down at the other
forums - but geez the site operators themselves were rude & if
you returned the favour - they'd send you to the bad room (off
the board).

Is it possible to restrict someone to another part of the
forum - you know have a seperate thread which you can only see
when you've been in trouble & you can post your rude & view
other peoples rude stuff there?

I could, but why bother? It's never come up, but I suspect I'd do temp bans for marginal offenses (after at least one warning) and a permanent ban if someone is over the top.

Sure, I could lock them into a kiddie room, but why?

Hey, good idea! Let's have a totally rude OT flame-fest free-for-all area...but wait, we all ready have a free-for-all forum...

(Of course, then there would always be complaints that some user was being *too polite* and should ought to be banned).

A thread like that is just going to encourage fights and flame wars that would only eventually spill over into the other forums. Its not worth the potential problems.

It's merely a view some people have which, in order to avoid
trouble people should be removed for a period - usually a
week, for them to settle down.

I thought that if there were a number of troublemakers out
there & over time you'd have this room full of funny rude
remarks.

Doesn't mean there's a few people here which need that, just
wondered.

Yes, a polite free for all forum. If you want an OT flamefest area I've got several that I visit. I don't want to host one. . . ;)

Well yeah, if a number of bad people went to the dugout at the
same time. It would be a form of isolation though, perhaps to
resolve that maybe it's possible to only reply to your own
rants thread & keep out of others & just have it that you can
only -view- others threads. Make it like a Gaol system - your
designated to one thread, but at times you can see
who's in
the other cells (hence viewing a different thread).

Sounds crazy I know! :) Gawd help us if it ever comes to that
though.

CPM U,

There is a 'Report' button at the top of the page. If someone has demonstrated unecessary rudeness, please report this behavior (privately, of course) to those who might be able to govern it.

Not that I need to at this point of time - I don't seem to be
able to find this so-called "Report" Button. Perhaps I've been
reported & have loss my "Reporting" previleages?

It was all a souped up idea anyway.

Fair enough, like I told Terry merely an idea...

Actaully I just wanted to know if it was possible - just in
case it comes in handy for future reference.

Any links for those flamefest forums?
