Ugg, thought i finally had one in the bag but nope! Why should I get a break?

I am in need of a motherboard. An IBM XT/286 board, p.n. 62X1025. And at this point I don't even care if it works; I'll MAKE it work!

So, story about earlier...by chance found one on Hard Disk Direct. $80! Ordered it, got an email saying that it was no good. I asked if they would sell it to me anyways, I'm pretty good behind a soldering iron. Long story short, Mr. Zack said he would've but the inspection team had already trashed it. I was absolutely gutted :(

Ugg, and I was really looking forward to playing Planet X3 on this thing...

May have just found one, but what do you think is a fair price for it? They're asking $800!

That is not a reasonable price. I am running into the same issue with my hunt for a model A 5150 motherboard (the 16 - 64Kb model). The few that pop up on ebay are way too much for them.

Oh $800 is way too much, I'd keep looking if i were you, I'd think a reasonable price for a working board would be around the $100 mark at the most.

Don't feel bad -- harddiskdirect.com is more than likely a dropshipper. I doubt they had it to begin with.

$800 is definitely way too much! That’s ctesales and nyce-distribution prices! I’ve seen whole 5162s go for less than $200 on eBay this year. They’re actually not a rare as most think.

you know, I am nyce-distribution. If you don't like the price, there's a button to make an offer. I accept offers quite frequently.

Really?

Case in point: Your Reply 32 PS/2 clone for $4,995. That machine might be worth $700 or $800 to the right person. I have a feeling you wouldn’t take that, but I’m not sure.

I want this hobby to remain reasonable and fun at all costs. I don’t want there to be a day where an old computer is worth as much as an antique car. That would be absolutely terrible.

I’m sure some people think I’m a complete ass for this, but as I said, I want this stuff to remain fun and reasonable. I don’t think you should have to be rich to play with vintage computers. But unfortunately, the people on eBay asking these insane prices seem to be trying to make it that way.

My passionate intolerance for this came when my PS/2 Model 80 died, and I started looking for another. Had a few people contact me that thought they were going to get rich off of me. Didn’t work, pissed me off, and in the end I got a whole working PS/2 Model 80 off of eBay for $66.

I just shipped this out of the country -- paid full ask on PayPal.
PS/2 8556

This shipped out two weeks ago:
Refurb Model 90

I could sell a lot more machines at used prices, but there are plenty of used machines on ebay for cheap. The Reply Model 32 is a high price, but it's also a nice bundle. Not to mention that microchannel clones aren't very common, let alone brand new in its box.

I'd rather post at a high price and negotiate down, than post like I'm giving things away and leaving money on the table.

I've got plenty of machines on this side in decent condition that are missing boxes, so if you're looking for a microchannel box, let me know.

Things that people collect have a value that's both personal and market based. Old cars are the same way. You're going to get a beater for a lot less than a museum quality piece. I'm sure an old computer will never reach the actual value of a nice antique car, but if you compare similar things, you're going to find that there's a continuum, some on the higher end others on the lower. It's all relative.

I completely agree with you -- you shouldn't have to be rolling with money to enjoy the hobby. But again, you shouldn't be upset, there are plenty of deals out there on old, used gear, and a lot of it is still really nice. I've sold many machines since I started this in 2015. I was so excited when I sold my first model 25 for $150 -- but as I got better at this, things like this became more common:

LGR Reviews the Model 25
Model 30 Review
Model 30 Unboxing

I'm not sure what died on your model 80 -- i might have had parts for you had you reached out. I had a bunch of model 80 parts a year ago, not so much anymore, but I might have been able to help out. When I blew up the power supply in my 7012, the lowest I found a replacement for was $550. Being in the industry, no was was I going to pay that, but I totally understand your frustration -- I'm not deaf to the struggle. I did get it going again, a friend sent me a replacement power supply.

To the OP, sorry for hijacking your thread, but I've seen my ebay handle kicked around the newsgroup a few times now recently, all of it negative. I'm a pretty solid seller, and a decent guy. I try to make sure that my systems are tested before they ship -- I offer cool upgrades that are otherwise unavailable, and I enjoy this. The folks who've purchased machines or parts from me, I'm sure they're also enjoying theirs.

If anyone sees anything on the ebay side -- feel free to message me. If I can't give you want you want for the price you're asking, I might have something similar that would work.

Hi everybody,

I really think we should take a collective step back and think about things. What somebody wants to charge on eBay for their property is not really our business.

We are interested in knowing if a particular community member is acting in bad faith and ripping people off, but pricing opinions are just that - opinions, and they are not on topic. We have a policy against this type of discussion for a reason; people will just have to disagree on how useful these threads are, but they will have to agree not to do it here.

Apologies. Not trying to cause any problems.

I’ll keep it to myself in the future.

These kinds of things happen when people don't understand basic supply and demand. Things are worth what people will pay for them. I can have an emotional reaction to some of your prices, but if someone buys your items at the price you're asking, I can't really be upset. The market is made by people spending money on items.

I could probably sell my loose Adlib Gold sound card for $1000. Two previous loose cards sold recently for $1250 and $2500. Are these ridiculous prices? Emotionally, yes. Are they unrealistic or doing people harm or "incorrect"? Not if people are paying them, which they are. If I sold mine, I would be taking advantage of a market bubble, not intentionally trying to "hurt" or "scam" people.

A large portion of resale price outrage is due to "prospective buyer's remorse": They either wish they'd picked up the item when prices were low, or are frustrated they can't afford the current market value.

All that said, I can't comprehend the pricing of the IBM PS/2 8556 -- how you valued it at that, or how someone in the world thought that was valid. New Old Stock is generally only worth that kind of money when it's unopened and unmodified...

I can absolutely understand the situation from both the buyer and the seller side of the story. In the recent years i have trashed several stuff that would nowdays worth multiple hundred dollars one by one even if its not 100% functional. There was some cases when just month after i have trashed something, the price just received an additional 0 after the end.

I've got both an IBM 5150 16-64K mainboard and one of those 5162 mainboards... can I quit my daytime job now and retire? :p

But on a more serious side: I see this in other collector fields as well. I'm also into retro MTB (and a bit into retro fishing gear) and it's the same there, you want to ride a cool neon 90's MTB, no problem it's not that expensive... you want that rare team edition pink/white/green KLEIN Attitude from 1991 that the pro's rode? Be ready to shell out 2500+ USD for a nice one.

What does always surprise me though is that somehow when it's old computer stuff, some people seem to think that a crappy SB Vibra is also retro and thus it's worth it's weight in gold (something I can "kinda" understand for an Adlib Gold or maybe a GSU Max etc). But I guess that's eBay for ya. Years ago when I was still collecting IBM stuff (I only have one Model 30 286 left now) I'd pick up stuff on eBay all the time... now prices just don't justify for me anymore (especially with shipping, I had Tandon drives for the 5150 shipped from the US and it wasn't that expensive, now it's crazy). I'm not saying prices are crazy (but of course I'm also bummed that I had to pay 200 euros for a GUS Max but it was worth it for me), I'm just saying they don't justify for me anymore and that's something everyone should decide for themselves right?

Just my 2 cts...

FYI, you can play Planet X3 on literally any PC ever made as long as it has any graphics capability and the system has 256KB RAM. You don't need a 286...
I know, It's just the only real DOS system I hvae so far, DOSBox just ain't the same, y'know?

Update: I've found about a dozen websites lisiting it as "in stock"
And by in stock I mean they take your card info, and email you two days later saying "Oops, never mind", even though their website still says in stock.
Or I ask for a quote and same thing, if they even get back to me.

This is pure scammery! Why the heck is it so immposible to get this part?????

Ya', I know... and, for the most part, I like DOSBox better. :)

Better sound, better picture quality, smoother scrolling, etc. There's no comparison. I think all that period-correct hardware authenticity sucks when it's so inferior to later technology hardware. I prefer to enjoy the software to its fullest rather than relive it in its dark age originality.
