hey all! i am attempting to install OS/2 warp 4.52 from boot floppies containing support for large disks on an IBM PC server 500, and i am seeing "SYSINST2.EXE failed to return target drive" when i load the third and final floppy and try to continue installation from CD. i am able to drop to a command prompt, and supposedly running the command manually from X:\OS2IMAGE\DISK_1 might help, but i am unable to cd to DISK_1- the shell tells me the directory does not exist. i have two arrays, 9GB and 18GB, connected to IBM fast/wide streaming RAID adapters. appreciate any help you can provide!

I ran into a similar problem installing Windows many years ago from boot floppy and a CD (with a larger-than-normal hard disk I was trying to install on).

Unfortunately, and not very helpfully for you, I have no idea what I did in the end to solve the problem. I found the information on the Microsoft website. It was not an 'obvious' step.

Not sure about OS/2 though...

I've never used OS/2, but I'd guess you still need drivers for the SCSI controller for OS/2 to be able to see the drives on it.

Maybe try a generic IDE disk first to see if the install media is good, then go back to SCSI and figure out what drivers you're missing.

Thanks Chuck, you just kickstarted a neuron firing!

At the time I was installing directly from CDROM.

I had to make a set of boot floppies then copy over my new driver off the disk that came with the hard disk controller card onto one of the boot floppies. I then had to boot from the floppies, and complete the installation with the CDROM.

Again, this was for an NT server installation and not OS/2.

i believe i located the drivers in the option disks here, but loading them onto disk 1 per the included readme still results in the same error. the readme says:

NOTE: OS/2 CD-ROM INSTALLATION

Make a copy of OS/2 Diskette 1 and use the copy of Diskette 1 to
install OS/2. Copy IBMRAID.ADD from the OS2 subdirectory of the
Streaming-RAID option diskette to copy of Diskette 1 and add following
line

BASEDEV=IBMRAID.ADD

to CONFIG.SYS file in Diskette 1. If diskette 1 does not have enough
diskette space to copy the driver, delete device drivers from diskette
1 that are not being used to make space for IBMRAID.ADD (make sure that
you make a copy of diskette 1 before deleting any files). CD-ROM can
be connected to any channel and can have SCSI-IDs 0 to 6 as long as it
does not conflict with and other SCSI device IDs or bays (equivalent
SCSI-ID) that is currently connected to Streaming-RAID Adapter/A.

my diskette should be set up properly, but installation still won't continue.

Code:
hush@sachiki ~ ❯❯❯ ls /fdd/ibmr*
/fdd/IBMRAID2  /fdd/IBMRAID.ADD  /fdd/IBMRAID.DDP  /fdd/IBMRAID.LOG  /fdd/IBMRAIDN
hush@sachiki ~ ❯❯❯ grep IBMRAID /fdd/CONFIG.SYS
BASEDEV=IBMRAID.ADD

Oh well, we tried...

indeed, and it actually worked for warp 4, but sadly not for 4.52. followed the exact same process to get warp 4 installed and it took on the first try, so i have no idea what i might be doing wrong. i did notice that when i got the system installed, it wanted to install support for a mylex DAC960 adapter, which i believe is a different model... might be something, could be nothing.

appreciate the help regardless, of course!
