I'm restoring an IBM 5150 that came to me as a "parts donor." It had a lot of parts missing but it has a near perfect case and an upgraded PSU. I have most of the electrical stuff sorted out and am now going through a stack of TM-100-2A drives looking for the best two for this 5150. I've already experienced the "exploding C36" with one drive and another that won't let the PSU start up due to a dead short on the 12v input pin. Probably another failed C36. I'll sort them out as I go.

But I've noticed something else, non electrical in nature, that I'd like to sort out if possible. On every one of my five drives, there seems to be excessive drag from the write protect arm. On one of the drives it threatens to buckle the disk jacket if you don't play with it a bit till the disk jacket slides past the write protect arm. Take a look at figure 5-23 on page 5-27 of this document to see what I'm talking about. It can be a bit awkward to see it in the drive itself.

I watched a YouTube video of a guy tuning up one of these cleaning and lubing various parts. At one point he sprays a bit of cleaner into the area of the write protect switch, but it's difficult to make out the details and there's no real narration on the video.

Have any of you had any experience in tinkering with this area of a TM-100-2A? Is this something that cleaning will improve or have these drives always been difficult to slide a disk into?

Oh yes, I have had ones where its been impossible to insert a floppy and after a clean & lub, the disk slips in.
